A touching note

Having a rummage around the interior of a mk2 in a breakers yard in Cardiff I came across a hand written note in the glove box. It started"dear MX5",thanking it for all the fun driving around in it.Signed off by saying they were going to miss it,followed by several xxxx’s. Obviously a much loved car

I used to love mooching round cars in breakers yards when I was younger.  Doesn’t seem much option to do that any more.

Great note though!  It’s worked in a way as it’s given you something to smile at.

I got put off a breakers yard, first by the set of false teeth found lying in the footwell of a car, and in the suspiciously rusty brown mangled drivers seat on a rolled G-Limited Eunos Roadster (A-pillars completely flattened, driver was probably a goner).

I remember patting my NA on the boot lid as I left it at the salvage yard. Happily, someone rescued it and it’s back on the road.

Over 45 years go I bought a mini pick up complete with canvas tilt. Got it at the greyhound track, Elland Road, opposite the football ground? They used to hold car auctions there  Anyway, one of those cars going though the block with “no warranty given or implied”  Drove it home, kept jumping out of 2nd gear  someone said to me that easiest fix was to get a complete engine/gearbox unit and swap over, so that’s what I did. Went to local scrappers and they had a complete mini van which I test drove round the yard! £30 lighter I got the van home, set to and swapped out the engines, throwing the old one in the back of the van. A scrap man saw it on the drive ( the van ) and gave me IIRC £5 to take it away? Result! While stripping it down, looked under the rubber mats where the floor starter button was and found a gold ring? £10 was exchanged for that! Only £15 down at this point, minus the cost of an engine lift hire? 2 days later, guess what? The new engine/gearbox decided to start jumping out of 2nd gear!!!

Car went back through the block at the same Elland Road greyhound stadium auctions  “no warranty given or implied”

Back in Belfast in the late 70’s my mates and myself found a van in a field in the edge of the Falls Road (google it). On looking on the inside of said van there were boxes ( black pen marked with “help your self” ) to the roof unopened. Now as a boy any box is fascinating, but unopened is even more engrossing…

No need to break windows as they are already smashed, so… we climb in… we open a box… OMG ( for those of a “latter” age group Oh My God ) it’s full of LED watches. Not any LED watch the first ever made. At this time in Belfast there were so many soldiers nearly every street corner was “green”… ( they wore plain green combats then). So my mates and me thought??? easy money…

Next day when we went to collect the soldiers fish & chips ( they were not allowed out of barracks) we offered them a LED watch for a fiver? - All I can say at this point is I bought my first every NEW 10 speed bicycle with the money made.

In later life found out that the said watches were the first in Belfast on route to H Samuels jewelers. Shame I did not keep a few must be worth a “bob” or two in today’s money.

I found a very touching note the other day in SWMBO’s 2002 Mk2.5.

We had the OEM calipers replaced at Xmas. One failed and grabbed the rear disc.

Fixed under parts warranty, and they produced a zero balance garage bill whish was left on the passenger seat.

First bill from a garage with zero cash. Very touched.
