Aagghh - the ever deepening money pit! Battery (?) issues

Just when I thought my mk1 eunos roadster couldn’t cost any more…I’ve just spent £1500 on full service, mot, power steering, discs and brakes, draining of tank due to weird stuff in tank, etc etc. It’s off the road for 3 weeks and now it wont start. Have tried a jump start but nothing at all shows on the dash…if the battery needs replacing should I still get some kind of spark? It was a jump start with another car. The very first time I tried it some lights came on the dash but then went dead. Tried two more times and absolutely nothing showing so from what you’ve said it isn’t just the battery. Loose connection maybe considering the car has just had the full works? Bugger! So looks like I will need a tow to a garage then. Does anyone know how much I’d have to pay for instant emergency breakdown cover? Please help this now skint but still just about 5 loving amateur! Many thanks.

p.s. I’m in North London - car is in Crouch End. Thanks Rik.

If the car wont start, no lights on the dash with a jump start id be inclined to think its a fault elsewhere than the battery.  No sure what else would kill everything from working.  Dont know on the recovery side but usually its expensive just to get the car collected and dropped off somewhere.  Put which area you are in and other members closer to you location may have some idea’s.

Hi

Firstly put your location in your profile as mentioned above.

What do you mean by a jump start, if you mean a push start with a flat battery then you will need to push it fast enough for the alternator to provide a charge, I would have thought at least 30mph.

If you mean using a slave battery and jump leads, then if there are no lights on the dash that means either the slave battery is also dead, or there is another problem with the car.

 Join the AA or RAC.

Call them out and they will probably diagnose the fault.

I they cannot fix it they will tow you to a garage of your choice.

 Hi

I had a similar problem some years back (not on a 5) , turned out to be corroded connections between the battery and leads. I cleaned all the contact faces on the battery and leads. Sorted! Hope it’s that simple for you. Heres hoping …John

ok guys thanks for the hints - will investigate this week and let you know how i get on!
