Abarth 124 spider exhaust onto MK4 mx5

Hi all,

As both the 124 and MK4 are pretty much the same car besides exterior and a turbo (I may be wrong), has anyone thought about putting the Abarth 124 quad tip exhaust onto the MK4? Looking at pictures, it looks like it may work. Wondering if anyone has had the same idea or know of anyone who has done this?

Thanks

It’s a different engine altogether I believe

I believe you may be right. Think I have read somewhere that it’s a different engine, rather than a Abarth/Fiat sticking their logo on and adding a turbo.

Looking at the photos of both the mufflers, they look to be the same connector and the same fittings to fit.

The 124 Spider, including the Abarth, uses the Fiat 1.4 turbo engine so is unlikely to be compatible ‘out of the box’ at the manifold. Even if it is, the system is tuned for the Fiat engine, not the normally aspirated Mazda 1.5/2.0 so who knows what it will sound like. Nice thought, though, as the Abarth does sound wonderful…

As said it is an entirely different engine. But …err… why on earth would you want to ? It already looks absurd sticking on a quad pipe exhaust on a wheedly little 1.4 turbo four and it won’t look any better on a 1.5 /2litre NA 4 pot . Quad tip exhausts belong , if anywhere , on V12s and on anything with a lower cylinder count it’s an affectation at best…

And have you heard a 124 Spider? Hilariously naff is putting it kindly.

I’ve always liked/wanted a quad tipped exhaust on a car, last car was a Nissan Juke. I find the Abarth 124 sounds good, it’s personal preference at the end often day

There’re aftermarket quad tips available from Fox, Blitz, RK Design etc

I was hoping I could simply take the back box off the Abarth 124 and stick it onto the mx5.

The RK design looks good

Of course you can fit a 124 exhaust to a MX5. Anything is possible with a cutting torch.

The rear box looks like it’ll swap from those photos.

Thanks for this. A good clear picture underneath the cars

That’s what I’m thinking!

Wouldn’t you need to cut the rear bumper about to get it to fit?

I like this one, individual preference I know and at least it’s visually better balanced than the factory pipes.

Wonder what it sounds like

In my opinion this looks better than the factory pipe as it is balanced. Not sure about four pipes though.

Looks good but I’m not keen on the sound :frowning: May have to wait until there are some more quad tip exhaust available and they have come down in price.

From Brian Goodwin in America:

“None of the Fiat exhaust system bolts to MX5 version.  Cutouts in the bumper don’t match, etc.

Most fun you are likely to find in ND muffler is our ND RoadsterSport Race, sold over there by Racing Beat Europe”.
