ABOUT TO PURCHASE MX5 2.0i 2007

Hello, I am about to purchase a Mazda mx5 2.0i Sport 2007.

I inquired about when the cambelt was last changed according to the service records, and was informed it is chain driven so no 60k changes required.

Can someone confirm that for me please.

Regards, Sarnia

Do an MOT history check and check the oil level !.

Hi

Have you seen this:-

Richard.

2.0 is chain driven

Check around the number plate lights in the boot lid for signs of corrosion.

Chances are it won’t be major, but may require some fettling.

Similar under the front edge of the bonnet and bonnet shut.

If you’re prepared to crawl underneath, check the chassis above the exhaust silencer for signs of corrosion.

Thank you all for you generous and most helpful responses to my question.

I look forward to picking up my car on Friday, and being a contributor here when I can.

Regards

Sarnia

Round the circular indicator repeater on the back of the front wings, that area can rust for some reason.

Re seal the scuttle grommets.

It is needing the antifreeze changed this year as it is 11 years old and when you are doing that and if you have access to a lift or pit take the undershield off and get some underseal and cavity wax in there as well as a general underseal and cavity wax all over the underside.

the mk 3 has a timing chain

There is some paint bubbling around the number plate lights, but definitely penetration of rust. Have a rust treatment to stop any possible deteriation, and paint on top.

Nothing under the bonnet. Will get my garage to do the underside checks, otherwise all is great, very pleased with it.

It is a 2007 2.0i Sport, is that a mk 3.

Looking at the engine there are 2 belts in front.

Yes, a MKIII or an NC (see the 4th & 5th digits of the VIN). It should only have 1 long belt that drives all of the engine ancillaries.

Thank you for your reply, has certainly cleared up the timing drive type.

My 4th and 5th VIN digits are NC, what does this mean or indicate.

Thank you

Mk 1    NA

Mk 2    NB

Mk 3    NC

Mk 4    ND

Is your purchase a PRHT (an electric hard top)?    PHRT’s have a steel boot lid and soft top NC’s have aluminium.

While you’re at it check the rubber seals for the numberplate lamps, they deteriorate over time as that part of the boot lid gets all sorts of muck thrown at it; a real dirt and water trap. If you have a local Mazda dealer pay them a visit; same price as MX5Parts, but no delivery charge. Unless you’re going to the National Rally, historically a 10% discount from MX5Parts and no delivery charge if they don’t have the item on site.

The rubber seals are in pretty good condition, after cleaning I have used silicon grease when replaced them (something I learned from my sailing days to protect from weather)

Thank you for your message and the tip as to where to purchase at discount, will bare that in mind.

Thank you Richard, the rust is purely surface, no penetration at all.

I do have an electric hard-top so therefore the rust. In another post I have described the treatment I have employed.
