ABS light

I’m new, a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to technology, but an MX5 owner, so be gentle…

I have a 2001 Silver MK2.5. I’ve had it about 8 years and its been a lot of fun. Now, I garage it for half the year

on a sorn, just to save the expense of running two cars.

I’m just thinking and preparing it for re-taxing and I went to start it the other day. As soon as I came to it I knew the battery was dead because no internal light came on when I opened the door. Usually I run the car to keep the battery charged up, but I must have missed a few sessions…

I jump started it from my Mazda 6, and it ran very smoothly, however, it now has the orange ABS light continually illuminated when the ignition is on and the engine is running. I’ve run it a few times since and the light always comes on and stays on. When I garaged the car last year there were no problems with it, and the light was not on.

What can this be? Is there a simple fix? The car will need an MOT soon and I believe they wont pass it with the ABS warning light on.

Any ideas?

You need to do a code read. The ABS lamp will flash out a fault code with the TBS and GND terminals in the DIAGNOSTIC box under the bonnet bridged. Do a search (TBS GND) on this forum for a detailed procedure of what to do.

Thanks, but sorry, I dont understand most of what you said!
Where will the code be? What do I do with it? and what does TBS and GND stand for?
I can’t even do the search you said to do, to find the detailed procedure…!
I told you to be gentle…!

If you drive the car a few miles it will reset the ABS itself unless you have bigger problem. Rust on the drives from not being used over the winter.Test drive it first and then see if its still on.!!

The ABS system will store a fault code in it’s control module. This is output by a series of flashes of the ABS lamp when 2 terminals are bridged in the DIAGNOSTIC box which is under the bonnet on the passenger side.

Here is a link to the search page click

Type TBS GND in the lower box.

As Robert said, driving the car may clear the light if no actual faults exist.

Get someone you can trust to check the system and the ABS sensors before you are told it is a ECU fault and can be cured for £1,800 + VAT .

Are you anywhere near us or one of the team buddy

Spent a bit of time driving up and down…maybe 4 miles or so (with last years tax showing!) but the ABS light refuses to go out. When I put the car away there was no problems, and its been garaged…so…what next? Can these things just fail? Or can I clean them (it) somehow? Or is it related to the battery going flat (now all charged up). Dont think I’m capable of doing the code thing with the diagnostic box. Don’t even know where this is, and besides, if its faulty, it will still need replacing, which is probably beyond me too!

My local garage said bring it in as it needs to be sorted before MOT. BUT…if they tell me a story about CPU’s or New sensors at great expense, they’ll have me over a barrel…

I’m in Ruthin , North Wales if anyone knows of a knowledgeable expert nearby…!

Morning not an entire waste. I stripped my door panel to see why the electric window was intermittantly jamming. A bit messy but I found that one of the drive cables had come unclipped from the door and the window was “sitting” down on it when opened. The clip was still on the cable so it was simple enough to just push it back through the hole in the door and open it out.
Gave the lot a clean and a spray grease and bingo…all working fine now. Bugger getting the panel back on though…

Just the ABS to sort now, and I can get it taxed and MOD’d…
