AC Evaporator replacement cost MK 3

My aircon stopped working, I had a sudden haze in the cabin from the vents so assuming its a leak in the evaporator. I think the connectors to the evaporator is in the engine bay so perhaps that’s unlikely as I wouldn’t have seen the haze? I know that I could get a vacuum check done but sometimes the vacuum check is not always reliable as certain leaks points close up under vacuum. Any body got a likely cost of a garage fixing it and is this a known failure.
