Adding a tether to the front bumper cover?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC3 / Mk3.75
  2. I’m based near: Planet Earth
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Adding a tether to the front bumper cover

I’m sure that I am not alone among NC owners in having lost the tie-down hook cover from my front bumper. Personally, I blame the number of potholes on our roads, but who knows?

The covers are not that expensive, but they are supplied in black plastic and need painting in body colour; not the cheapest exercise, especially if you have a Soul Red car.

I’ve managed to get a replacement, but I’ve been wondering about adding a tether (possibly glueing a nylon zip-tie or similar between the back of the cover and the inside of the bumper).

Some people have glued their covers in place, but this is not a solution that I like, as you never know when you may need access to the socket. But some silicone sealant might hold the cover in place, while allowing it to be removed if required?

So – has anybody come up with a solution to this issue? If so, what did/did not work for you?

We use fishing wire to secure go-pro cameras to the motorbikes.
If it will hold a go-pro - it will hold the tow hook cover.

You could also consider gluing a metal plate on to the cover and gluing magnets inside the bumper.

I rebent the clips on mine after it became loose. Otherwise I would glue it in with waterproof wood glue - will hold it well enough but will give way when needed for removal.
