Admiral Insurance - Any Opinions ?

Insurance on my multicar policy is coming up for renewal.  Although happy with my current insurer Aviva I always get alternative quotes.

Admiral has come up with a quote of £506.17 to comprehensively cover all three cars, MX-5, GT86 and Ford Puma which appears to be a very good price.  Unfortunately Admiral gets some absolutely diabolical reviews from policy holders.

Has anyone any recent experience of Admiral and can give an honest opinion of them, please ?

I’ve used admiral for years on and off and to be honest ive never had a problem with them, having said that ive never needed to claim but I have switched cars added drivers etc without problems. I switched at renewal this year as I could get my mx5 insured on a classic policy for much less then they could quote

The issue I have has is that Admiral seem to treat a speed awareness course as worse than 3 points!

Once they asked if I had been on a course the quote shot up by about 25%.

Seems they are the only insurance company that asks the question…

Nick,

Admiral load their premiums in ways that seem very strange to us.

They loaded my wife for a no-fault claim when all costs were recovered by saying that although it wasn’t her fault their analysis shows she would now be more likely to have another claim in future!

They call this “no fault loading” and it goes completely against the old way that if you are found innocent and recover all costs you aren’t penalised.

You will pay the “no fault loading” on every car you insure with them, or are a named driver on, for the next 3 years as they ask you to declare any incident whether at fault or not.

We have now moved one policy from them and will move the other at renewal.

Diamond and Elephant are part of the Admiral group and you may want to read more about their sharp practices,

When I was with them they had a poor attitude towards (lightly) modified cars.  I tried their multi-car policy, but they didn’t have a good understanding of what I needed as a customer.  I went with another insurer once I’d realized that the policy wasn’t good value.

I had them for one year on a 2 car policy but the renewal was sky high so I moved on.

Like most company’s they seem to offer good deals to new customers then put the prices up next renewal.
My wife and I have a multi car policy for her car and my MX5. In February she retired and thought she would let them know thinking the premium would go down, as she had been insured for business use. Oh how wrong we were. They put her insurance up because " as you are retired you will have more time to drive around " and what really pissed me off is they put my part of the insurance up for the same reason.
I’ll be looking to change next year, but to be honest they’re all crooks in my opinion )-:

Both my daughters have had claims with Admiral group companies and the service was excellent . Youngest daughter ran into the rear of a car in her Clio writing her car off . Elephant paid out more than she paid for the car and she was allowed to take of the alloy wheels and swop the stereo before the salvage company disposed of it . Obviously she had to fit standard wheels and stereo as replacement . Settlement cheque arrived in less than 3 weeks if my memory serves me correct .

Eldest daughter had her house broken into and keys stolen burglar then took her Citroen C3 . Car was recovered and Admiral replaced whatever was needed without quibble .  I cannot speak highly enough about Admiral but Aviva with their foreign call centre have been rubbish dealing with a very minor accident my wife was involved in where blame is in dispute .

We were with Admiral for many years on the old 1996/7 Vectra from new, after my previous insurer Norwich Union (now Aviva) gave a silly quote, and Admiral offered about 25% of the NU price.  Admiral did not bump up the renewal premiums except for minor dribbles in line with inflation, until two years ago when suddenly it went up by two and a half times for no reason, no claims or incidents in all 16 years.  Why?  So we went elsewhere, after a polite, calm and reasoned discussion with Admiral.

John Lewis Insurance took over at about 4/5 of the previous year’s low price from Admiral, and did not bump it last year, waiting to see what happens in November for the next renewal.

JL gave me the best quote for my 2008 Niseko at £290, not quite the cheapest but the best cover (London, garaged, limited mileage, two old fossils driving it), and so now they are insuring it as well.  A separate policy (better IMHO), since they don’t do multi-car.

Thanks for all the opinions on Admiral.

Finally went with LV=, but had to take out three policies as they don’t do a Multicar Policy, still saved £251 over the Aviva renewal and also £50 cheaper than Admiral quoted.

Like Aviva, LV= are a Defaqto 5-Star motor insurer so should offer a good service…

When I changed my Honda for the Mazda it was an Admiral advisor that told me the reason for the quote being almost double was because the Mazda was a Japanese car, hence the higher rate.
