Advice please - Mk1 door cards

My Eunos door cards need replacing as the holes in the card for the clips have deteriorated so some no longer hold the clips properly and the door cards then come away from the door in places. I find the pockets really useful and many of the replacement cards don’t seem to have pockets. Can anyone advise where to get some original type doorcards suitable for those with the teardrop type metal main speaker covers?

Cheers

Matt

Short of checking the breakers there is:

Thanks once again Saz,

Actually I had spotted this one and would be prepared to buy but thought it might require some fettling for my non round Eunos speaker grill cover and wondered if there was a more specific one. The alternative as you say may be a second hand one. Pity is the non card part of mine is in really good nick but I imagine replacing the card bit might be very fiddly.

If you take the teardrop cover off, you have a round hole, as per the Newton part. Teardrop speaker cover was also fitted to some UK models. In bother cases, you need to punch some fixing holes.
Recovering new board is an easy and satisfying job. However, its unlikely your existing cover will transfer to a new board. I used Martrim stretchy vinyl; a hair dryer got it around the corners.

Useful video, and just freestyle it:

That is a good write up and I like the knee support you have added. Before I had new knees fitted I used to have a soft sponge support to relieve the pain from arthritic  knees.

You can buy hardboard that is thinner than the normal stuff if you go to a picture framer and ask them to sell you some  Picture Backing Board. You should be able to get two door cards out of one sheet of Backing Board.

Moss do (or did) replacement door cards in various styles too. I bought a set in their sale to put away ‘for a rainy day’.

Saz, looks like you got a great result with your doorcards. I was quite pleased with myself for successfully replacing my speedo dial recently with a kmh +mph one (without breaking any clips) but remembering the mess I used to make doing Airfix models as a kid anything involving sticky stuff is likely to end in tears. Happy to fettle the Newton ones though so that is probably the way forward for me

Thanks Doug,

Out of interest what is the quality like and do you find one with pockets?

Are your existing door cards in otherwise good order, so just the fixing retainers that have become damaged?

This is a very common issue particularly where water has become involved and the card is removed whilst in a slightly sodden state. It is just thick cardboard after all.

Assuming these have become split/damaged in the same way a few of mine have, you could try a repair. The issue is stress on the fixing when removing the plastic plugs from the door so it is possible to glue a strong, thin bracing plate(metal or plastic with a slot to locate around and over the positioned fixing.

My advice is to minimise removal of the cards but if you have to, use a tool to exert pressure on the plug to remove rather than pulling on the door card - I have used a standard eating fork for this.

Thanks Rhino,

Yes it is exactly as you describe and largely due to water ingress. When I bought the car I purchased the tool for removing the clips and have tried to be careful but have had the cards off numerous times for various reasons and I have tried a few things to strengthen the clip slots. In fact looks like the previous owner had also had a go and used some thin aluminium plates to reinforce. Unfortunately I think the boarding is now warped and probably beyond repair which is a pity as I have tried to keep things pretty original.

Hi Matt

If the boarding is irretrievable I think you are going the right route by buying new cards. From memory, the cardboard part is available but I would not expect to be able to transfer the used skin over in a satisfactory way. Be interested to hear if anyone has succeeded with this?

In my case damp got to the board because of a breach of the plastic membrane. Worth making sure that yours are securely gooped to the metal door skin and any splits/holes gaffer taped up. Shutting the stable door after horse has bolted but still worth doing particularly if car stored outside and moving towards our wetter season.

One last suggestion with the warping. Take the cards off, dampen the board where distorted and dry out flat and weighted down. If you can straighten them out and stop damp getting to them when fitted the problem should go away.

I would suggest adding some PVA glue to the water or even use neat PVA to dampen. Hopefully might stick the fibres back together.

I make new cards for my Eunos from hardboard covered in vinyl with some very thin foam (laminate flooring underlay). I stapled rather than glued the vinyl to the hardboard.

Thanks all

I suspect the previous owner used some PVA glue or equivalent in places but these areas have become quite brittle. Another issue is that although I like having the pockets and use them a lot (I keep a couple of demister pads in the drivers side pocket which act as a useful soft armrest) this does put an extra load on the cards

Just to say I eventually decided to purchase the Moss door cards as they sell Various types including one specifically designed for the Eunos tear drop speaker covers I have and they have the pockets which were important to me. Not cheap at over £190 pounds but I did negotiate 10% discount on this figure as an OC member (they don’t automatically offer this).Quality pretty good but I hadn’t appreciated that the upper door pad is not included so this had to be swapped over from the original cards and some minor fettling done including some stapling at one end Of each pad. Very pleased with the result. Thanks all for the advice
