Aftermarket Central Locking - Lights Flash

 Dear all,

Have fitted an aftermarket central locking kit to my 5 (mk2). There is a wire from the CL control box for connection to the indicator/hazard lights to make them flash when the locks are actuated. Unfortunately I have no idea where to connect the wire…!

I looked at the connector to the hazard warning light push button on the dash, however there are 7 wires from this, so no idea there…

Has anyone fitted 3rd party central locking and wired up the indicators to flash at the same time ?

Thanks in advance !

Steve

Hi Steve -

Not sure if this will help (or not) as I’m going by the circuit for a Mk2.5.

The hazard warning switch connects ground (negative) to the flasher unit, which on the 2.5 is located beneath the sidewall trim below the A pillar on the drivers side. You need to check if the wire from the new CL unit is positive going - or negative. If it’s negative, then just connect it to the non-grounded side of the hazard switch (coloured orange on the 2.5) and this should set the turn signals flashing while the CL output is on. If the wire colour from the hazard switch is not orange, thren it’s any colour other than black - which should be the ground connection to the switch.

However - if the CL wire is positive going, then you would need a relay which needs connecting so that the ground connection is on one side of the relay coil, and also on one side of the normally open relay contacts. Connect the CL postive wire to the other side of the relay coil, and take a new wire from the other open contact of the relay to the wire running from the hazard switch to the flasher unit (whatever colour is used.) This should work the same as above.

I’m assuming (not a good thing to do!) that the flasher unit on the Mk2 is the same as that fitted to the Mk2.5, but if the hazard switch is connecting to ground, then either method should work, even if the  flasher units are different. Mazda have always followed the policy that switches make ground connections, so my monies on the Mk2 hazard switch doing the same.

I assume that you know how to check the polarity coming from the new CL unit on the signal wire? If not - ask me!

Relay - get one from Halfords - automotive type, 12 vdc, contact rating say 30 amps. fix it solidly near the hazard switch. If all else fails - use gaffer tape! HTH.

Now you know what to do on Boxing day!

Don’t bother - you’ll hear the reassuring clunk of the locks anyway… Cool

 Thanks Gerryn,

Pretty sure the CL wire is positive - it throws out a 12v signal through my multimeter (red probe) with the black probe connected to ground when CL is actuated. So assuming that the 2nd option with the relay is the one to go for here ?

Very helpful advice - and as you say one for the Xmas holiday. Will need to find the flasher unit and take a look…

Cheers

Steve

Yep - you need a relay. I just re-read your first post, and you say there are seven wires on the connector to the hazard switch, that doesn’t agree with the Mk2.5 wiring, there are only four, two (with the stripes) are for the warning light, and the other two are the hard ground, and the switched ground to the flasher unit. The flasher unit itself does have seven wires though, these are 1) supply from the fuse box - brown/white 2) RH turn from turn signal switch - black/red 3) LH turn from turn signal switch - green/yellow 4) Ground for flasher unit - black 5) left turn output -  Green/black 6) Right turn output - green/white and 7) negative input from hazard switch - orange.

I’ll keep an eye out on boxing day to see if you need any help - but it may not be instantaneous, bear with me on this! Any questions in the meantime I will answer when I can.

Steve - Did you get this sorted?

No - not yet ! Usual story, too cold, too much snow, not enough time etc etc !

Hopefully will get this sorted in the next few weeks.
