aftermarket radio with steering wheel control +MIC

just fitted a kenwood double din dab radio and also bought a connects 2 steering wheel adapter and a patch lead, all works spot on apart from i don’t have anywhere to plug the mic in as the patch lead it plugged into where the mic should go, searched on the net and cant find any info ,does this mean you cant use the microphone if you are using the steering wheel controls or am i missing something.

Strange - I’ve a Kenwood double din (DPX7000-DAB) and the patch lead only bridged the ISO connector to the back of the headunit. The microphone input was still free as a result.

that’s the exact same radio as ive got ,the patch lead has a jack plug on it and plugs into where the microphone should go unless i’m doing something wrong which is quite likely.

this is the patch lead i have.

Have you checked the rear of the unit for a separate socket for the mic? On my Alpine head unit the mic plugged direct into the rear, not to the ISO lead.

the patch lead is plugged in the rear of the unit, there is only one socket on the back of the unit.

Same here with a Kenwood DMX7017DABS, but it was a Bose system link using Connects 2 CTSMZ012.2 Stalk Adapter for Mazda MX-5 and Stereo Stalk Patch Lead Connects2 Kenwood Stalk Patch Lead Din Connector from Car Audio Connect. My only problem was powering-up the Bose amp; used the aerial power supply and all working well.

so are you saying that you don’t have the jack plug from the patch cable plugged into the back of the headunit, all of the patch cables i’ve seen plug into the back of the unit.

When I fitted my aftermarket double din unit, although not the same as yours Dave, the SWC “patch” lead has several different connections for various head units. It was a connects one IIRC. Without digging out the box and instructions, you probably don’t need the small Jack plugged into your unit to make it all work? The head unit (possibly) will have a built in mic with the socket being used to “extend” the mic via an external wired mic to a better location. Try it with the Jack unplugged?

edit; just looked at the link you provided Dave. The video shows a kenwood unit bring wired in. It also shows that the Jack connection is not used. It also shows which wires to use on a table in the video. The Alpine units appear to use the Jack plug.

Checking the video on the car audio direct website and the Kenwood manual, to connect the steering wheel control adapter to a Kenwood unit you should -

  1. Remove the J1and J2 links (orange and green)

  2. Connect the ‘Key 1’ lead to the light blue / yellow lead on the head unit connector (should be labelled remote adapter)

Jack on the remote adapter lead isn’t used with Kenwood.

cheers guys i will give that a go then, i did watch a connects 2 video and it showed connecting the jack plug on a kenwood stereo , i had already cut the orange and green wires, thanks again.

just to update thread ,left the jack plug from the patch wire unplugged as suggested and the mic works perfectly
