Aftermarket steering wheel + boss, binding and horn won't fit?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: MX-5 MK2 2000
  2. I’m based near: Scotland, Fife
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Aftermarket steering wheel issues

I have two issues I’m trying to resolve with my new steering wheel. I’ve purchase a Works Bell standard boss and a Motamec 350mm wheel.

First issue is the horn. It does not fit through the new boss once it’s pressed into the steering wheel itself and it’s not even remotely close to fitting, I’ve for now taken the little metal surround you get with the wheel and used it as a spacer at the back so there is a space for the clips to sit in but this isn’t really a solution since I sorta need that to hold the horn in.

Secondly it seems the wheel is binding on something, possibly the turn signal clock at the back? It sounds like platic on plastic and the wheel does not self centre.

I can provide pictures tomorrow when I get the car from its MOT but for now hopefully someone has a “aha I’ve had that problem” and chimes in!

IS MOT even going to pass that? Any wheel without an airbag will fail since the car came from the factory with one(maybe certain Eunos versions and Canadian market ones came without?, at least that is true for NAs). I personally hated the aftermarket wheel I was using, all it did was block the gauges and have horn issues. I wasted little time swapping it to a Mazda 6 wheel…steering wheel controls for radio and cruise control are nice….besides, I have yet to see an aftermarket wheel that looks as good as the NB era OEM Mazda 3-spoke wheels.

It passed the MOT yeah. I took it somewhere that had a reputable history of track/race car stuff.

The car is only used to drive to my local track, so it has a stripped interior and that so I believe it comes under that whole rally exception type thing (at the discretion of the garage).

I actually fixed both problems this afternoon. Some spacers fixed both.

Also I had the ugly early 4 spoke wheel, biggest issue was my hand hit my knee when i turned to the left so a smaller wheel was required, not much space with the bucket seat and that.
