I have a 1996 Eunos 1.6 Roadster with Air-con. The compressor has developed a leak “somewhere near the front”, the report said.
So the compressor is going to be removed and stripped down and defective seals hopefully replaced.
Has anyone done this on a Eunos that old and more importantly, were all the seals for the compressor easy to source?
Thanks,
Chris
Hi Chris
I can only suggest that the leak is from one on the pipe unions where there are ‘o’ ring seals.
Not sure where specifically you would get these but would start with an aircon specialist if not available from the usual sources.
If the pump is leaking from it’s main case seals, would be quite difficult/impossible to repair as the cause is usually corrosion as well as seal degradation.
I have not been able to see where the pipes go into the compressor - it is all just a black hole down there; I will make an attempt tomorrow and see if one of the pipes is right at the front of the compressor. If it is just an ‘o’ ring then I am sure my local garage will be able to sort that - unusually amongst garages they are exceptionally good!
I am hopeful that corrosion isn’t the problem and that any seal that has gone is just down to wear. However, until the compressor is removed and stripped down I have no idea what it’s like in terms of construction as I have no drawings.
I quite like the air-con as in summer in our changeable weather conditions it can get quite muggy with the hood up when it’s warm but raining! If necessary I may have to clean up a part by machining to deal with corrosion or even make a new part, I am prepared to do that if necessary, but obviously hope it won’t be.
The only seals that can easily be replaced are the 2 behind the main pipes ,where they bolt onto the pump manifold. However,in real life, these rarely leak. The other seals that can leak are the main body frame seal and the front crankshaft seal.Replacement of the latter requires special tools. This is more likely where the leak is.Also you need to establish what make pump you have.
I’m just going through the same with mine ( check out my earlier posts asking for help). Mine is a 95 1.8 so I’m not sure it will be the same compressor but on mine the low pressure pipe goes in at the front on the side, just behind the pullley, the high pressure one is at the back on the top. You can just get to the top one from above, but for the side one you have to get at it from underneath. I tried to get new O rings from Mazda but failed. I was able to get some from a local AC company though.
Good luck.
