Air con ? How many?

I’m curious as to what percentage of 5s have air con ?
I really don’t see the point unless a cars used in winter.

Me +1, no idea what that does to percentages, on that odd hot day with the top down a cool breeze in the nether regions can be welcome, on a more usual cold damp day then the ability of the A/C to clear the windows is also good.

My 5 is my year-round daily driver so likewise, use the air con for de-fogging or with the heat on if I want to go top-down on a cooler day. Honestly, it makes it the cosiest place in the world while still being able to enjoy the fresh air

It’s pretty useful in the 5 whatever the season.

Before I had air-con on a car I was sceptical and thinking of the effect on mpg, and on the first one (where I had to keep fiddling with it) even more so.

But the Climate Control on my Niseko is superb, having set it at 19 I’ve not needed to touch it in years! It is clever enough to re-arrange the air flows and heat/cool depending on what’s required with or without top without me even thinking about it. So I’m sold on it.

The CC in the Mazda3 is also excellent, and allows for the passenger to have a different temperature to the driver.

Air con is great. What is worse than no air con is having it but it doesn’t work. Mine didn’t work for 2 years but with a little help from the guys on here I fixed it for about 50 pence. Money very well spent.

I had the opportunity to take a (bullet riddled, it had taken a few stray rounds in its life)) 95 Miata M-Edition for a blast in Missouri about 15 years back. Top down. Within 10 minutes, I was being cooked on the tan leather seats. Up came the hood, on with the aircon. It has its place.

My aircon hasn’t worked for 10+ years. There are bits hanging off it.

On the NA MX5 (at least), under WOT, the aircon clutch disengages.

Mine had it but it didn’t work all that effectively, after my condenser got destroyed at the start of the year I removed it all and to be honest I don’t really miss it. Still get a good bit of heat when needed on the colder drives. Only real downside is that demisting takes an extra few minutes but that’s about the only major difference I’ve noticed.

Another with Air con here. I even went to the trouble of fitting it in a non AC car.

It’s the inverse of the roof really. I tend to have the roof down more in the colder months when I can be in the open air without turning into a lobster. In the summer when I’m on a longer journey I’ll have the roof up and the AC on for the same reason.

edit: The AC in the Mazda is fabulous too. Puts my tin tops to shame.

Definitely a useful thing to have, even with the roof open.

Cheers for the replies.

I am however interested in how many cars percentage wise (roughly) have air con not why you have it.
I get the de misting thing as I mentioned above :+1::+1:

I have it on mine but not working fully at the moment  Will get it sorted though :+1:

For the original model at least, it was more or less standard for all Eunos Roadster, and I don’t think was even option on UK market cars.

So I suppose the majority of surviving NAs in the UK have it fitted, but it might not be functional.

I’ve heard that in Japan, where summers are hot and humid, the top stays up and the aircon comes on but in winter the tops stay down to enjoy the sun and cooler air. I suppose this why Japanese domestic cars have aircon but UK cars didn’t as it wasn’t so popular back in the 90’s. The aircon pipes on my Roadster rusted away before I took ownership so I removed all the heavy parts when I changed the cambelt. Saved a few pounds in weight (about 40 as I recall).

Mine has it and it’s something I insist on now in my older age. However it is ■■■■ in the mk4! Or is it? Maybe mine needs gassing but shouldn’t do at 2 years old?

Have it checked with Mazda. Their was a faulty batch of condensers across the board. (Said the dealer). Ours went after 18 months in our Mazda 2. :+1::slightly_smiling_face:

Will have to run it down to Oakmere, will never go to Warrington mazda again - worst service ever

What was the fault, do you know?

Specifically no, but the condenser failed and leaked all the gas apparently. Replaced under warranty. (Not as a result of external damage).
Should be really cold on full.
(Might not be that, but as it’s under warranty etc). :+1:
PS for the thread no idea on the % fitted with air con. Why just as a matter of interest?

Hopefully Oakmere will be more interested in warranty work. Warrington couldn’t be less interested. Don’t think it’s actually broken, but is definitely not as strong as it is in my Skoda!
