Air conditioning

OK so it has suddenly got hot around here so I’m testing the air conditioning. I would describe it as mediocre to fair. Is that to be expected for a Mk3 or should I pay out to have the system serviced?

On the other side the heater is fantastic Cool

I found the air con on my previous NC as fine and just as good in my ND.   If you are finding your’s not cool enough then I guess there’s nothing to be lost by having a quick re-gas as, is my experience, systems generally require a re-gas every 3 years or so.

I actually use it when the roof is down and it’s ludicrously 'ott to blow cold air on my face and cool my toes.  It makes the experience more bearable and saves having to put the roof back up because the sun is too 'ott! Does anyone else do this or is it just me?

I think your approach is perfectly sensible. I’ll get it booked in for a re-gas.

Barry is right about the aircon on his previous NC. I know, I bought it from him three years ago. I haven’t had it regassed and it’s still blowing an icy gale. I use ‘decadent’ mode too. Roof down, aircon on. My other car is a similar age Mazda 6. I’ve had that regassed and sanitised and it’s still nowhere near as effective or fragrant as the NC.

Think you need to get it checked and regassed. Probably not the best time to have it done. Expect queues around the car park!

no - it’s not just you - I do that too…

I do it too!  Just have in fact.  Boy am I glad I don’t have leather seats!  I wonder, do they make a “non-stick” finish for leather seats?

I’m very happy with the air con in my Mk3. The ‘Climate control’ does just what we want all the time, leave it on Auto, set a temp and it will get there in the correct vents. Magic. Just sometimes the aircon button needs to be pressed to remind it that the cooling has to be on. It is now 8 years old and has not been re-gassed.

The NC’s aircon is much, much better than that in the old Vectra, but we are now suffering in that because we needed to take far too much useless rubbish with us on a self-catering beach holiday - daft - but it is what SWMBO wanted.

I so wish we were in the MX5 this week. Some of the roads in West Wales are utterly glorious.

Me too, on the way home tonight, noticed the impact in the MPG too.

I had my 2008 regassed in December 2015 at a cost fo £75 including VAT but that was a country garage could be nearer £100 in a city.

2005 Subatu not needing regassed but the 2007 Suzuki Jeep is starting to need a regas.

Agreed, it does impact a little on MPG but what price comfort I say ?!

Whilst we are on the subject of aircon (and not wishing to hijack op) … does anyone have any technical knowledge as to how frequently it is advisable to use the aircon, from the point of view of ‘keeping the rubber seals lubricated’ and wot not? Or is that just an old wives tale? (no offence to any ‘old wives’ who may be reading this…'old husbands/civil partners apply also and in equal measures)
