Annoyingly sqeaky clutch pedal on Mk3.5 NC

Hi Folks.  I have a 12 plate Mk 3.5 NC MX5 sport tech with a squeeky clutch pedal. It sounds just like a squeeky spring but I have lubricated the double return springs but no joy. It happens both when pushing down and releasing the pedal higher up than the clutch bite point and is definately inside the footwell somewhere.  When I push the pedal by hand I can feel a vibration in time with the squeek and I can hear it very clearly, just can’t pinpoint the source. I have sprayed WD40 all over the moving parts but apart from WD40 dripping on the mat and pedal nothing has changed.  There doesn’t seem to be any similar posts around but i was hoping someone could help.

Thanks

Ian

I too have has this issue on my NC but not quite as regularly, only on occasions when depressing the clutch pedal. I’ve been down the WD40 route which didn’t work. I’ve managed to stop it by refering to the workshop manual. On the diagram of the clutch pedal assemble can be seen a small grease can pointing towards a bushing that connects the clutch pedal to the clutch push rod. I’ve managed to remove this and coat with grease and reassemble. Also in the manual is a description of how to adjust the clutch pedal to within the desired tolerances. After carrying out both of these procedures the squeak as vanished. It could be a combination of the two things together or one of the two that has worked for me. The clutch pedal is very tough to access so I thought whilst I was in the contorted position I might as well do the both. I believe that the squeak may come from too much freeplay in the pedal.

Thanks for the info greengrass79. Although your squeek came from a bush, did it sound like it came from a spring, like a noisy bed spring noise ?

The noise I had a definite metallic note to it, mine occurred when depressing the pedal on the down stroke particularly after not changing gear for a period of time. Come to think of it it did have a bed Spring noise comparison. Still I was unsure which actually worked for me, was it the bush lubrication or pedal adjustment.

The clutchpedal of my NC is also squeeking, but only when engine is on and warm. So no noice when engine is off or the first few minutes after start. Nothing serious I hope, but I’m bringing the car to an MX5 specialist tomorrow to check it out just te be sure. I will keep you posted on the results!

In the meantime I found this nice video on the topic, maybe it is of some help for others with the same ‘problem’:

Sadly non of the solutions as mentioned in the video. Pressure bearing (excuse my non-technical google translation) was worn out and replaced. Replaced the clutch and pressure plate at the same time while clutchhousing was open. No more squeaking, clutch works as a charm again! Very pleased, except with the invoice…
