Another exhaust question

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC1 2LTR
  2. I’m based near: __Newton Abbot Devon
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Centre pipe

Hi folks, I took the car to work this morning and half way there things suddenly got louder. Once the snow had stopped I went underneath and found the exhaust had parted company with the centre box.
I work for a motor factor so I can get a standard exhaust cheaply but I am tempted to go for stainless as I’m likely to keep the car for a good few years. Does anyone know if it is possible to buy just the centre section in stainless so that I can then add the backbox at a later date? I don’t mind something slightly louder than standard but I don’t want a full blown sports exhaust. Ideally a standard exhaust would be good but they all seem to be sports exhausts. Would there be any issues regarding bore size if I mixed them?
The other option would be to just replace the centre piece with mild steel and then replace the whole lot when the back box gives up.
Thanks Mike

Try Powerflow Exhausts.
Used them on my NC replacing the centre resonator box with a silencer.
Have a rear SS box, 4-1 manifold and was just a bit too loud.
SS is inherently louder due to various reasons any how.
Other specialists about too.
Find a local one and discuss your options. :+1:

Mx5parts do a repair section (below) it seems to be a common place for them to give way.
Probably sort that out for you until you decide what to go with. Sometimes the flange nuts/bolts to the joint on the back boxes can get rusted up, can take some freeing up.

Thanks for the replies. I can get the centre piece in mild steel from work for £55 (it pays to work for a motor factor at times) so I will probably do that to get the car back on the road and then switch to stainless at a later date.
