My advice would be to get at least 3 quotes, in writing, for the same spec of roofing. If you mention that you are getting other quotes, it may help them to be more competitive. Avoid any that don’t confirm the full spec in writing. Also check out time scale and once they start they must include for protecting the stripped roof if they can not do it all on the same day.
My builder mate used to do jobs for me, mates rate too. He built my garage/extension, repaired my roof a couple of times (wind damage) and knocked a couple internal walls down to open up rooms downstairs.
Moving on when he retired with bad knees I found a roofer who re tiled my son’s house, re capped the roof on my house and fitted various stuff like new guttering and facias verges.
I then got him up on my 35 year old felted garage roof and asked him to give me a quote to recover it. He told me you don’t need any such thing it’s good and came back with some bitumen to paint over it. Leaving me with the paint asking it should do you to cover it (me doing it) he then got his ladders out and said to the lad with him, get your gloves on we’ll do it now. An hour later it was done, he just charged me for the paint and left. Later he bought me some more paint and left it by my garage. I rang him up to ask how much and replied no worries just use it if needs be it’s yours.
All the work he did for me and my son was top notch at great prices. He was efficient and turned up when he promised, never actually came across anyone so keen on doing a job and giving advice on it. He’s packed in now, not seen him for a couple of years, he was always around the area, proper registered company etc.
Not helping you I know but I was replying to ND12 and his fear it seemed of getting roofing or builders quotes or work done. There are some decent tradespeople out there who won’t rip you off, it’s just finding that can be a pain.
Anyway, if you don’t want it in the thread I can always delete it👍
I paid £2,760 for a single garage, asbestos removal, new wood roofing structure, facia boards and re roofed with rubber, I think it included some work on the garage back door too. This is in Surrey so price often higher here anyway. A local small builder did the work, all other quotes from garage roof specialist were £3K plus, the rubber looks good and works really well.
