Anyone else having problems with the lacquer on the bumpers?

My car’s gleaming paintwork is looking increasingly blighted by the lacquer peeling on the front bumper. It’s a 1999 car.

Is this common?

And what can be done about it?

Many thanks.

The lacquer bubbled on the back bumper of my 96 Merlot so , as there were a few bumps in the boot lid caused by the previous owner shutting it while over-full , I had both sorted out at the same time .

I have a 1999 Mk2 in classic red and both front and rear bumpers the lacquer is peeling.

I have the same problem with the lacquer peeling but not the bumpers, mine is on the rear number plate panel. Its peeling all around the number plate recess edges and on the top edge just below the boot lid. I was thinking about getting Chips-Away to give me a quote. This is also on a Merlot.

We also have the peeling lacquer issue on Project Merlot - mostly on the rear bumper and number plate surround and a bit on the n/s front wing. I previously suspected that maybe the car had been resprayed in the past but having seen the above posts, now i’m not so sure.

It sounds like all your cars have had spray work done at some point and not very good if it is coming away now the only thing to do if you do not want to re spray it again to an high standard is get yourself some rubbing down paste /over spray paste and attack it gently, then use a good t-cut to buff it back up and then apply your polish, hopefully this should hide it.

Hope this helps

Mine’s red, and yes, front and rear bumpers faded. I think most cars in red have problems with paintwork at some point after 10 years.
