sooo, my 1993 K reg Japan special is âbrilliant black clearcoatâ (code PZ).
[note: iâve re-edited this because i found the right paint].
the paint doesnât require a lacquer. just interested if anyone has touched up their car with PZ and is this what you did? (not use an additional lacquer).

Years ago, I had some PZ mixed up for me at Halfords (when they did such things). I asked the mixer what went into it. Black was the answer.
Its not a metallic. It doesnât need a lacquer. But I think lacquer can help the home bodger to get a shine on the going to town rig.

I used it on a Classic Good clean of existing paint and a perfect matchâŚno laquer

I have a 1992 Eunos, and the MX5 parts PZ touch up matches perfectly with no laquer, even though Laquer supplied in the Mazda kit

thanks
i have to ask though, because iâm not sure if the previous owner used lacquer, even though they shouldnât have done. when a couple of people have seen the paintwork on the tops of both doors, theyâve said that this is lacquer:
it does look that way because the marks are clear. they donât look like paint drips. but iâd be grateful if anyone with knowledge of these things wants to throw in their opinion as well.
if the person has used lacquer on the doors, does that mean i will have to as well in order for it to match?

Looks like evidence of prior paint repairs. To be brutally honest, most of the Eunos Roadsters that made it here were not premium quality; the good stuff stayed in Japan, which is why you see some terrific NA examples on sale on Carsensor.
Paint repairs might have been indifferent, rushed, bodged, amateur, which could have been done there, or by whatever cowboy back in the day imported the car (there were a lot on the import gig, most of which disappeared when the exchange rates went south). Importers used to like the grade 3.5s (cars with minor body repairs), not so much that the car had a history of minor body repair, but because the paint had been done, and the car turned around quickly, after being at sea/in docks for 6-8 weeks.
I suspect you will need half door repaint, rather than thinking you can âtouchâ the damage in. You could try cutting it back, nothing lost. But the original paint is thin; I had a 1991 Roadster, in red. Very shiney, thanks to the previous owner, who ran a car parts shop, had one of the lads machine polish the car once a month. Primer showed through on the edgesâŚ

thanks, great info as always
i just realised, because i cropped the pics, i made those marks look much bigger than they actually are. the last one looks huge. when actually, the worst one is like 2 cms.
anyways, iâll do what i can.

New paint is water based ,so its all centered around the clear coat for high shine and protection, it is defo lacquer peel, very common with a cheap repair when a lot of masking tape as been used on the edges rather than removing and re-fitting an item back onto fresh paint, lazy and cutting corners for issues further down the line.
The only way to solve it ,is to strip and have it redone correct , but they will ( or might ) need to blow into the surrounding panels and feather off for it to look correct.
I have used PZ many times and is just brilliant black, the other code states a fleck which was for the NBâs on, every one i have dealt with as had no fleck in, be it a uk mx5 or JDM roadster, and they have also been PZ regardless, ( i personally own a Mk1 and MK 2 Roadsters in black PZ also)
Its just a poor spray job, we deal with it every week, they are at the age where nearly all have if not all have had some kind of work along their life so far, there not many out there now have had nothing done at some point any more, just depends how will documented it as been.
