App for navigating a route/circuit of fun b-roads?

Hi All,

Looking for an that will take me on some good B roads or A roads instead of all the normal fastest/boring routes.

Do you know of any? Or what do you do?

We use a good old-fashioned paper map to plot a route and then use way points to force the MX5 ND satnav to take us the way we want. It is a bit long winded but you get used to it and become more proficient with repetition. The big downside is you can not save it so you only have the one route available.

Waze appears to be not up to using multiple way points. We have tried Google which was easy to plot a route on the computer and then send it to the phone, but, it appears that it keeps changing it dependent on current traffic. The original route chosen is not set in stone which is what we would prefer.
I will keep an eye on this to see what others do to fix a chosen route.

Roads by Porsche is free on Android. My nephew (NB owner) swears by it.

I also use Waze and plot the route the same as you do.
I admit that it is long winded, but at least you are in control.

My old Garmin Sat Nav could put 3 way points in, but the cost of updates made and upgrades made me part ways with it.

TomTom Go app on iPhone has an option to take a winding route - you do have to pay for it but it is worth the money in my opinion

Rever was recommended by someone at Donington earlier this year.

Relying on satnav to give you a route sucks every little bit of joy and spontaneity out of planning a drive . Why rely on someone else’s algorithm when all you need is a map , actual or virtual , and a little bit of creativity ? If you wish, plot it into your route as Malc suggests .

There is a feature in Waze and Google Maps for disabling use of freeways in settings. Unless I am in a hurry I will generally use this. Setting a circular route is much more difficult not managed successfully save such a plotted route in G Map on my laptop and then transfer it to G Map on my phone which is a great pity.

For circular routes, I can confirm that https://www.myrouteapp.com/ has a feature to plot a circular route. And you can define what level of hilliness and/or twisty-roadness you’re looking for.

I’ve used it a few times, and sometimes set up a route on there, then import it onto my TomTom satnav

Not an app, but this site could help you narrow areas / roads - https://roadcurvature.com/

My dog turned this setting on once without letting me know, turning a 5 hour journey into a 9 hour one! Classic.

I use Google maps then save to home screen. Currently on a road trip doing the NC500 with a diffrent route set up for each day - moved from homescreem to a new page. I also save the map area to my 'phone so nav would continue to work without signal. It seems to be going well. Just have to remember to press ‘continue’ after each waypoint.

All that fuss when there’s only a handful of roads anyway in NW Scotland?

That’s a useful option, use it myself when setting up run routes.

Hi John, missing you. Try memorising this–

We usually string 3 days together like this and it would be impossible to commit it to memory. This is where the sat nav starts to win over paper.
