I’ve recently bought a MK3.75 sport tech nav car. The standard fit stereo and nav is dire. The sound is tinny and the sat nav is far from user friendly. Other cars in the family have Apple Car Play so we use Google Maps which I feel is way better.
Has any one changed their head unit for an apple car play device? If so is there one that they can recommend? How easy is to remove the existing unit and replace it?
I have the below in mine and its fabulous, (Mine was standard Bose NC 3.5) everything works from the steering wheel. phone connects in the glovebox and not a cable in sight !!..downloaded the waize app for satnav and the whole set up is better than the one on my 2 year old Mondeo. Looks factory fitted too. Paid £238 for it during a Halfords sale after they accepted my MX5 club discount.
I believe it is reasonably easy to fit but I had a professional do it and am glad I did as it came with a hidden controller to set up and control the speaker sound and volume in relation to the occupants in the car, I would have just left it as is as it sounded good but the guy fitting it adjusted everything to where I was sat and the difference was amazing
I upgraded my MK4 to apple car play / Android auto.
On a MK4 you ned to change the box that’s behind the 2 usb sockets. Sounds easy, doens’t it.
The sting in the tail is needing to plug in a wire that sits up near the display unit.
It’s good though, I’m very pleased I have upgraded it.
I got a great deal on a Panasonic unit from NCR in Nottingham, I got them to fit it too. Made a great job and at considerable saving over Halfords, I wasn’t particularly confident with Halfords technicians.
I also fitted MX5 parts uprated door speakers which other than the connectors are a straight swap. Very pleased with the result. Apple Car Play so much better than anything from Tomtom or Garmin
