I have a 2006 model with the original radio. Am interested to hear if anyone has used a standalone unit such as those on Amazon to integrate my phone, or any other options. Many thanks
I have never seen a stand alone screen look tidy in an MX5.
For the cost of an aftermarket head unit and facia plate - it is a far neater solution with more benefits than just Carplay.
Steering wheel controls still work
Looks integrated with the car
Music from sd card, usb stick etc
Apps like “Torque” to act as an OBD fault reader
Etc etc
This is my 2006 with a 7" aftermarket head unit
Hear, hear I’d thought about one very briefly but, I thought to myself where would it sit, the charging cable looks unsightly amongst a few other thoughts.
Android head units dont cost much more they integrate well with the NC interiors.
Personally I’d give it some serious thought.
This unit was only fitted yesterday in my car…so glad I did it and eternally grateful for the help getting it fitted.
That looks very well integrated.
Is it wired or wireless?
Does it have DAB radio?
What is the sound like compared to the Bose setup?
Cost?
Cheers - John
It’s wired or wireless, I’ve used it both ways but, I suppose it’s better wired as it charges at the same time.
Sounds great, not sure how it compares to a Bose system as mine is non Bose.
I bought a Dab+ dongle but, I’ve since found out I can use my phone for Dab radio.
Cost, less than £300 I shopped around
Just to add - my head unit has pre-outs so I still run the Bose amp / speakers.
The aftermarket head unit really wakes up the Bose amp ( guessing slightly higher output to the amp )
It also has a 24 channel equalizer so you can tweek to your own taste.
And as Squibnocket1 says - they are wired and wireless ( I run wired so it charges at the same time )
I also added a Brodit holder/charger so the phone is secure.
Thanks for all the info, that sounds like an upgrade path for me. What exact model is yours? I like the idea of the pre-outs going to the Bose amp. Not sure where the Bose amp is physically situated and I thought it might be part of the head unit id be taking out. Do you know?
Is there much rewiring involved? Do you need to use an external mic rather than the stock one for telephone calls etc?
Bose amp is behind you under the area where the hood sits when lowered.
Mine is an EONON Q04pro
If you use the connects 2 wiring harness it is close to plug and play.
I modified the connects 2 harness so it had phono plugs on it rather than use their resistor pack.
The head unit comes with a mic - I mounted it on the steering column.
