Apple CarPlay Very hard to use without touchscreen

Picked up my new to me MX5 ND2 (2023) Exclusive Line.

The car has wireless apple CarPlay which I’ve used in several cars before including on my old MX5 NC with a pioneer radio upgrade and its so easy to use with WAZE for navigation , calls , music etc.

BUT on the ND the touch screen is disabled when moving which makes selecting what you want very hard, I assume its meant to be a safety feature but its quite the opposite and makes using the system quite dangerous.

Have other users got used to it ? , is there a way to turn the touch screen on ?
I just assumed it would work like it does on every other car I have used it in.

Das.

There is a way to turn on the touchscreen when moving using mazda tweeks but you need to feel confident using the hacking software.

But read all instructions CAREFULLY before using this. It does work as i have enabled on my 2021 and many others have done likewise.

Happy to help if your local (Reading)

Thanks , that looks like an option, unfortunately I’m no where near you, but i’m sure I could follow the instructions. Shame there isn’t an official way to turn the touchscreen on.

Some muscle memory does start to develop when using the scroll wheel for a period of time. I’m usually dead against touch screens in cars but given the compactness of the cabin, touchscreen capability would be much more useful.

I might explore the hack at some point in the future but I usually set my destination and preferred music playlist prior to setting off so don’t tend to do a lot of fiddling once actually on the move.

Have a look at this post on Miata.net

Also worth updating the firmware and buying the new usb module.

Looks quite simple, will see what firmware my car has, how do you update the firmware if it’s not the latest ?

Pm me

Hmmmm that all looks very straightforward. My firmware was updated last year when I got car play retrofitted at the dealer. I might have a go at this.

You would have thought that the Mazda software was sensible enough to know you NEED the screen to operate android auto / apple carplay properly.
Can’t be rocket science to do it.

Thanks BlueAgave.

My car had the latest firmware.
I setup the usb drive as per the instructions , and loaded the hack, all working great.

Touch screen now works all the time and Apple CarPlay works as it should.

Thanks for the help.

It’s something Mazda should do to all cars with CarPlay .

It’s enabled in the latest model ND3. All you have to do is put a tick in “enable carplay in motion” somewhere in the settings.

Just ran this without a hitch. Wow.

Also did this - didn’t work first time as I was using a Macbook formatted FAT usb disk but once it was formatted on a Windows machine it worked perfectly.

Many thanks to the OP for spotting this on Miata site . . .

Just as a follow up, it has continued to work flawlessly and in a cabin so compact, tapping the touchscreen feels a lot safer than spinning the scroll wheel, working out which way is left or fight then making your selection.

Thank you @BlueAgave worked well on my 2019 ND2 with updated firmware.
As one comment in the thread mentioned,

The white screen with the diagnostic menu became visible again when the ignition was switched off → on. I then tapped ‘Reset’ and the system rebooted and everything was fine.
