Auto door locking

Hi I have had my 2004  NB FL 2.5 for 18 months. Only recently I notice that after unlocking the doors with the remote fob they relock after 30 seconds. It does not happen if I leave a door open  and does not happen when the vehicle is in motion. This has only just started to occur. My question is: Is this a genuine security feature of the model that I have somehow enabled? If that’s the case, the only thing I can think of I have done is recently purchased from ebay and paired a second spare remote fob. If it is not a security feature and  is indeed a fault, could this be a faulty  Door Lock Timer Relay?

If you don’t open either door within so many seconds of unlocking, it relocks as a security feature. Same as on my 2010 NC and virtually every car with remote central locking since the Ark (although you probably have to pay extra on a Merc/BMW).

That never happened with my 2008 Mk3 NC1 or 2009 Subaru or 2007 and 2016 Suzuki.

You need to drive some othe cars Bob.

Hi Eddie Cairns. Agreed with cars central  locking after you drive off as security against carjackers and footpads. But not as a feature to  auto lock after you get out and walk away. What about a passenger left in the vehicle that tries to exit after 30 seconds. Would they not set the alarm off? I have never seen this before. And, its only just started occurring after 18 months so I assume the previous owner never experienced this phenomenon either. So, if this is a proper feature does anyone know how to disable it before myself or spouse inadvertently leave the keys in the boot or on the seat and it locks itself.

It’s an anti-distraction feature. If you unlock the car but don’t open a door the car re-locks. For example you come out of your house, unlock the car realise you’ve forgotten something so go back inside, your car isn’t left unlocked. It also protects against accidental presses of the unlock button.

OK and thanks everyone. I guess it has been disabled for years and it and I must have re-enabled it when I recently paired a second key fob. However  as I am an old duffer lif anyone knows how to disable it before I lock my keys in the boot  I would be interested to know the procedure. Also if there are 2004 2.5 NB FL owners whose vehicle does not auto lock after 30 seconds please let me know and I can contact Mazda and ask why some models auto lock and some don’t.

Thanks to everyone for your help and advice.

I don’t know of there is a proper way to disable but a trick would be to link the boot pin switch that operates the boot light to the one on either the drivers or passenger door. That way whenever the boot is opened the car would think the doors are open too and not relock.

Should be doable with minimum trim removal

Thanks. I’ll ponder that should I not find another way of disabling it. I’ve done a bit more searching and find many others who have one way or another accidentally enabled this (factory set to disabled) walk away, auto lock feature. Nobody seems to have discovered what procedure to follow to disable it. General opinion is take it to a dealer but I’m pretty sure all they would do is follow a simple procedure to disable it. I used the simple procedure of opening and closing the door and turning the ignition on and off a few times to programme my new spare key fob which must be how it got enabled so stands to reason it would be similar sequence to reverse. I see someone with a Ford had the same problem. They tracked down a method involving shutting doors switching on and off etc. I’ll give that a try. You never know.
