I thought I had problems as the new Avatar update did not appear to remain in my profile. It seemed to update/load correctly but was gone next time I perused the full profile or a post I had made.
If you have a similar issue just clear/delete your browsing data. This deletes the old avatar reference from the cache and your updated image will display as expected.
