Backing up Satnav SD card

Was it just a matter of buying this SD card and plugging it into the MZD SatNav card slot?

Yes, although I updated my OS to V70 first.

I know the ‘replacement’ cards from the internet work on ND1 as I used one myself but has anyone succeeded in using one on the later models?

Can’t see why not, why would it be different?

The earlier cars came with or without satnav but later cars (ND2) were only available with sat nav. This combined with the fact that most advertisers appear to limit the model dates to earlier cars indicates that there is some difference hence the question. My gut feeling is that Mazda cottoned on to the cheaper cards and quite reasonably adjusted the software to block their use.
It would be useful to know if someone with a later car has successfully applied one of the cheaper replacement cards before parting with some money.

What a wonderful conspiracy theory you have concocted!

However as JimmyJam has updated the firmware to the latest version and the cheaper card works, it safe to say it will work on the ND2.

Good information, thank you. Do you know if he is able to get the free three year map updates as I did last time I purchased one?

Hi guys! Sorry for staying silent on this, been a hectic couple of weeks.

Let me clarify the situation I had -

I bought a 2016 nd1, which came with firmware v74 and the original SD card from Mazda. The card contained 2015 maps, so had clearly not been updated by the original owner.

With that card inserted, the infotainment system would reboot several times in cold weather, until the cabin heated up. This was a known issue and was caused by the original cards. It was a hardware issue, the cards simply didn’t operate at those temps.

I tried to clone that card to a non official sd card, since I’m a photographer and have loads laying around. None of the methods I tried worked (see original post).

I then bought a new card from satnavishop.co.uk as suggested by @stanfield, which solved the problem and brought my maps up to 2023.

Since then, I haven’t had a chance to check if I can clone the new card for a backup, nor have I checked to see if I get 3 years of map updates - I had assumed these cards were a “one and done” given the price.

I’ll try those things during the week and report back!

I would say no because with a new card the chassis number and possibly the date are written to the card. When you use the Mazda app to update the map it checks those to start the 3 year free update. If you try it with another new the the app will recognise that the chassis number has been used before, so no more updates.

Thank you, I have had a look on line and I think you are correct.
My ND1 did not have satnav so the cheap card I purchased to activate the system would be the first one to be attached to my VIN hence I did get the three year updates.

Thanks, that has worked and I now have the full set of maps and spare capacity.
