Backing up Satnav SD card

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2016 ND
  2. I’m based near: Southampton
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Satnav

Recently bought a 2016 ND with satnav, and want to backup the SD card for a couple of reasons -

  1. For an actual backup in case of failure
  2. The system is sluggish and reboots randomly when the weather is cold (until the cabin heats up).

Number 2 is apparently a known issue, and Mazda replaced them under warranty with cards that work better in the cold - but my car is no longer under warranty.

I’ve tried a few methods without success -

  • Using the mazda toolkit software. “Mazda update toolkit” says it’s incompatible with my card and directs me to download “mazda toolkit”, which I guess is older software. Mazda toolkit recognizes my card and says it’s valid, shows version etc, everything works fine, except the option to backup the card is missing, it just isn’t there. There is an option to “copy to an empty card”, which I tried, only to be told the one I inserted isn’t a genuine mazda card. I formatted it fat32 (found that in a forum post), made sure the partition was the same size as the genuine one, and even changed the drive label (software, not physical!).

  • Tried imaging with a couple of third party tools, Macrium reflect and Win32diskimager. Neither worked. Well, they worked, in that the files are all there, partition sizes right, label right, used space the same etc, as far as I can tell it’s an exact clone, but the unit rejects the card with “not a valid sd card” message.

  • Tried just copying the files. I didn’t expect it to work, but worth trying the simple stuff too!

Any ideas what else I can do? I get the feeling the dealership will just try to sell me another ridiculously expensive card. All the documentation says I should be able to do this via the mazda toolkit. I don’t even really care about the navigation myself, I just want to be sure it’s still working if/when I come to sell the car! I’m a sysadmin so having no backups makes me super uneasy.

You mention “Mazda Toolkit”, are you actually using Mazda Toolbox from this link?

Mazda Connect (mazdahandsfree.com)

I coped the card on my Windows PC which worked fine!

Best idea is to upgrade to Carplay/Android Auto which gives you access to free and up-to-date maps.

My mistake! Yes, that’s what I’m using

I think that a back up might only happen when you do an update… Don’t quote me on that though. It’s been a long time since I use the software.

I had the same problem with my 2016 ND, I updated the firmware to OS to V 74 thanks to BlueAgave and the got a new updated map card from MAZDA EUROPE 2023/2024 SAT NAV MAP SD CARD NAVIGATION UPDATE this has sorted the problem totally.

Looks like mine is already running v74.

That’s a lot more reasonable for the card than I’d seen elsewhere. I’ll quite happily pay £40 to save all this faff, have a backup, and update from 2015 to 2023 maps!

Thanks very much!

Don’t get the MZD Connect version confused with the Nav. Version. 2 very different things.

I just did a file copy across cards too and it worked fine.

Did you get the SD card and did it solve your problem?

I did, and it did!

Thank you very much!

I keep meaning to get a 16GB card - when updating the maps on the supplied 8GB one, I have to choose which maps to leave out. Not bothered about car play, for unfamiliar territory I prefer to use google on the phone and display an area map North-up on the LCD!

Back in 2017 I made a copy on another card as a back up and it didn’t work. I might have imaged it. You think just copying all files across should do it?

Yes. I just put the card in an SD card reader on my Windows PC and copied the files across to the PC, then back to the larger capacity non-Mazda SD card, it worked perfectly.

Just as easy using Carplay/Android Auto as using your mobile and you have a larger screen

I have been experiencing the same issues as the OP, how do I upgrade to v74? (Think I’m on an older version) Edit is it v56.00.523

Many thanks

I prefer 2 screens TBH. i have the zoomable map on the LCD and the phone track up to navigate. The problem with satnav especially on long unfamiliar routes is not having a clue where you are or what exactly the route planner is doing. I spotted a lovely Alpine pass last year that Google was trying to route me around.

Ok will do many thanks @BlueAgave

Big shout out to @BlueAgave for helping me with the infotainment update :+1:t2:. Thanks again !

Happy to help!
