I’ve ordered a new battery and an isolation switch from MX5 Parts. Hmmm, if I switch off the battery using the new switch it kills the electrics so do I then have a relatively serious problem with on-board electronics like immobiliser and dash readout?
And what exactly did you think was going to happen? Lol!
Sorry but that is about the funniest thing I have ever read on here

Thanks - I’ve now got a headache from banging my head on the wall! Sorry, I meant to ask if, having disconnected the battery to change it, I simply reconnect the new battery without damaging the car’s electronic gizmos? Since the car does not get a lot of use on salt encrusted winter roads I figured a good move to fit and use the cutoff switch but does the car needs to have its electrics connected at all times?
Shouldnt cause a problem to simply re-connect the battery, dependant on what stereo you have, you may need to re-enter the code.
Hope this helps

A better fix would be the correct [Ctek?] battery charger. Have a search, there has been a lot of discussion on the forum lately
MX5spares arrived overnight with parcel containing new battery ansd the cutoff switch. Fitting their new battery a doddle once the breather pipes had been swapped around to fit, however, the master switch is a problem as the existing negative is a moulded crimped device that would have to be cut off so that the cable only just long enough. The master switch is an interesting and elegant device where a fused link will continue to power up but the starter motor will not work so that it is not a master switch per se in that mode. Without the fuse link it will shut everything down inc radio presets tho that still works without recoding. I am sure that Geoff is right to recommend a drip feed charger that can be left ‘on’ when the car if left, however, in order to connect it to the battery the boot lid needs to be opened and on come the two boot lights! So, where is the pressure switch or whatever that will iusolate those off when boot open and charger connected?
G’day Keith
On my Mk1 I feed the connector cable through the
tunnel that runs from the top of the right hand suspension mount to the
rear of the drivers seat. I have no idea if this is possible with a Mk2

The charger hangs down from the garage roof [reminder that I need to fix it to the roof]

Thanks Geoff. I am very pleased that I can assume that you have not been washed away?
I’ll look for that communication tunnel and I had in mind one of those chargers to hang down to the car. A chum of mine has six cars in his collection and all are similarly left connected up – he was taken aback when I pointed out that the 4.5 Bentley was set at 6v!
The new battery is a Westco Glass Mat from MX5 Spares. It was £91.00 so much cheaper than the Panasonic and MX5 Spares make all sorts of claims that it a better product. Not original; tho which is a shame. I think that I will shelve this master switch plan, the more I consider it the more baggage it brings.
Incidentally, there was an hour long profile about Mark Knopfler on the TV last evening. Is he yours? I met him a few times in recent years, nice chap.
Best wishes

Thanks for the thought Keith, were fine here on the Sunshine Coast
Mark is in a different league to me, I met him many years ago in Newcastele upon Tyne, a real gent
