My 2013 battery is dead. I don’t think it’s been replaced since the car was new. If I change the battery myself what happens to stuff like hifi computer. I presume everything will need re booting ?? Is there a way to do this so I can remove the positive and negative connections without disrupting power to the car electrical system
When we swapped the battery on my son’s 2010 NC nothing bad happened. Or on my 2017 ND.
Your DSC/traction control warning lights will be on after a battery change.
Start the car, turn the steering to full left lock and then to full right lock. Turn the ignition off. The light will have turned off.
I remove the battery and connect it to a CTEK optimiser every winter when I hibernate the car (remote garage with no power)
No problem refitting - just reset the DSC as previously described
You can get an OBD connector with a positive & negative cable attached to it, plug it in under the dash and connect to an old battery (local garages will be only glad to give one to you and it only needs minimal charge) it will make an audible sound when connected which tells you the car is now running on the spare battery, change the one under the bonnet and then pull the OBD plug out, no settings will be lost (if they haven’t already) great bit of kit!
That’s interesting…so things like radio, sat nav and or navigation system where fine without any need of reinstallation of device
I don’t even recall the DSC resetting business. Perhaps that depends on how long it’s without power. The OBD2 lead sounds like a very handy gadget if there’s any concern.
Yes - no changes to anything, all settings phone connectivity remained
Thx to everyone in the mx5 community who responded to this discussion thread. So based on your help I got myself a new battery and changed it this morning. Absolutely straight forward. No problems with navigation system, hi fi, electricals, alarm…… as pointed out the traction control needed a simple reset. So this battery change out was on a 2013 NC. I can’t speak for later or earlier models………thx guys
Terminals should really be disconnected and reconnected in the correct order.
I was told to remember
