BBR Super 200 for ND1 - kit only

Hi guys

I’ve given some thought to this over the past while, and have decided to go ahead with this upgrade for my MX5. The lack of rev range / reluctance to rev is the only downside to the car, and it seems this upgrade cures that. I dont want to change to the newer ND2 which I understand has improved engine characteristics.

The issue I have is it that it isnt really feasible to travel to have this done - its a 7 hour drive each way with a ferry cost.

I now plan on purchasing the kit and getting it delivered for £30 and then fitted here. I’m happy fixing stuff of cars like brakes, suspension, exhausts (even did an engine conversion in the garage a few years ago) and have lots of tools and space, but after looking into swapping the camshafts, I’m not sure if I want to do it! Looks too complicated for me and too much to cock up.

So the question is - has anyone just bought the Super 200 kit and got a mechanic to fit it. I could fit the exhaust parts but as the manifold has to come off to get the head off, I’ll likely just get the mechanic to fit the lot.

It would then be a matter of getting the mechanic to load the map on the car?

Has anyone done it? I would really appreciate any feedback.

Many thanks
Adam.

I’ve been considering doing the same. But the changing cams scares me also!

The mark 4 looks amazing in yellow @Dweenimus and a nice plate to boot.

Thankies!

I thought that you could change the camshafts and valve springs on the ND without taking the head off. I don’t think BBR took the head off on my ND2 to fit the BBR Super 220 upgrade. They did the whole job in just a few hours.

Here you go ELECTRIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR, HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] | 2016 ND Shop Manual (hexorcism.com) Looks to confirm that camshafts come out without removing the head.

Thanks Guys for the extra info. Once the mechanic opens again after Easter I’ll call in and see if they can do it. I’m not going to attempt this, I’ll just pay someone to do it

Just one last check - has anyone had the BBR kit (specifically the cams) fitted by another mechanic. I have found a mechanic who works on older MX5’s but hasnt done cams (or much engine work) on the mk4. He says he’s happy to do it but is giving no indication of how long it will take, other than will need the car for a week, so obviously there is a cost implication here.

In a complete reversal of initial plans, the car is now booked in with BBR!!
