bbr turbos - How many are left?

 Hi,

As a proud owner of a BBR turbo, I am curious to understand how many are left in the UK?

Can anyone help me?

G’day mate, welcome to the forum—

Just a couple of pointers:-

It’s a good idea to put your rough location in your profile [this helps with us offering advice etc].

Also please put your car details in your sig, again helps when advice is being sought.

I’m going to move this to the general chat area, you’ll get more exposure

I can account for 22 of the Le Mans cars. 21 survive, 1 was written off. They all used the BBR conversion.

It’s taken almost four years to track down all the LM cars so over to you to find out how many ‘regular’ BBR cars were built and how many survive. It’ll have to be a labour of love. Shock

Good luck.

Approximately 850 units were made between November 1990 and September 1991. The LM’s were not apparently included in this figure. I know of one BBR that was definitely written off but lives on as a donor of parts to a local club members car.

 Thanks Doug,

Pardon my ignorance, what is a LM?

Regards

Joe

Sorry - my ignorance, not yours. LM = Le Mans Limited Edition. 24 were scheduled to celebrate the 1991 Le Mans win by Mazda with their 787B. All were to be orange/green diamond patterned, the colours being seperated by white dotted lines to emulate the colours of the race winning car. Of the 24 it is thought only 22 were built and of these, 5 were returned to be resprayed to ‘more marketable’ single colours - 2 were resprayed black, 2 orange and one blue. Of the 22 cars, 21 survive as one was written off in Switzerland. Of the 21 , one is in a ‘critical condition’ having been in an RTA 10 years ago. It’s still with the original owner but ‘needs finishing’ to make it roadworthy.

I saw a BBR turbo at Dandy Cars in Essex. I asked about how much it would be to buy, he said it wasn’t for sale it was a customers.

I’d guess you’d have to value them at £5k+ maybe £6k in half decent condition?

I would be interested to find out how many BBR Turbos there are still on the road. I have one and I haven’t come across many other owners on here except for the LM cars. I like the idea that my car would be worth 5-6k but I think that is a bit optimistic unless anyone else knows better!

I have a 1991 SE BBR Turbo (First Edition) in black and I know of another SE BBR (Second Edition) also in black which was at the Castle Coombe meet last year. I dont know whether these cars were part of the 850 mentioned above.

What was the power output in bhp terms? Any other mechanical changes?

KB

Output is 150 bhp.  The turbo kit is exactle the same as that fitted to the LMs and BBR Turbos. There are no other mechanical changes.

I have a '92 SE BBR Turbo as well. When I was thinking of buying mine, I was told that probably only about 15 had been put together in that combination, but I’ve no idea how accurate that is. I believe only 200 SE’s were made that year, and not many would have had the BBR conversion as well, so perhaps not too far fetched

(As it happens, I only found this thread as I was doing some research in preparation to selling my BBR. Not quite ready for a full “for sale” post, but feel free to PM for more info! )

Dave

Id say its all down tot he car the “kit” is attached to and also how is the manifold standing up etc.

Quite a few BBR’s seem to have undergone a few updgrades over the year with more modern ECU’s and better more efficient intercoolers.

Id say a BBR is worth only £1500 more then the like for like car its on.

IMHO

I am an interested but ignorant owner. What does BBR mean? Is there a definitive list of MX5 types and perhaps rough production numbers year by year?

I saw one at a Farnborough AutoSolo on the weekend, mostly sideways driven by one of the clubs members

After a quick search, here’s a wiki link to model types and numbers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mazda_MX-5_colors_and_special_editions

And some good info on the BBR turbo: http://www.mx5-3rdgenerationlimited.com/bbrturbo.htm

The quick version is that the BBR package was a UK dealer approved modification that could be added to your new MX-5, hench why you can get BBR’s based on different base car models.

Dave

BBR - Brodie Brittain Racing - a firm commisioned by Mazda to come up a Turbo conversion they could put their factory warranty behind.

From what I can work out (please plase please correct me), there were 850 (very aprox) kits sold. Some kits went to Mazda, I have read 250 and the rest went direct to owners in the UK and US. Some of these kits were for the 150bhp and some were the stage 2 200+bhp kits.

I have one car and a full kit of bits so there are two cars!
