Bears in goggles

Why do so many people with classic cars, not just MX5’s, have Teddy bears in goggles in their cars?

Good question as we have one. It arrived when we had a Caterham where flying jackets and goggles were almost obligatory in the colder months.

Or more likely we all have some psychological defect and need some counselling or even locking up for our own safety!! What do others think??

I first came across it in the 80’s when I had my Westfield, still got my flying jacket, but no goggles!

Alas, my sheepskin lined leather bike jacket (US Army surplus?) went to Uni with a daughter and vanished one day!
It cost this impoverished skinny student a small fortune in that bargain basement shop we all went to in the 1960s (now what was its name?)
Everoak Racemaster Helmet and Visor might still be in a box in the loft.

However, my Mum’s 1923 teddy (with broken growler) sits in pride of place on the shelf behind me to check on my spelling. :grinning:

That store for everything camping and military surplus was Milletts.

My subconscious took nearly two hours to kick out the answer…

The memory is still there, somewhere, but the retrieval system has gone from lightning fast to glacier slow.
Oh well.

So True and actually backed up by scientific [objective] research sez my BSc (Hons)

The ‘retrieval system’ is key with regards to memory

Needs a ‘Trigger’ to activate e.g. I didn’t remember .Milletts’ until RichardFX mentioned it

Seeing that bear in the best possible place reminds me of one I saw maybe twenty years ago in Canada, before my MX5 days. Alas, after a couple of weeks of intermittent searches in boxes, I still can’t find the photograph I took (old fashioned colour print).

It was not an MX5, but a slightly bigger car a with very nice roll cage, and the grizzly looking at the following traffic was wearing RCMP uniform and hat and pointing a matching speed camera in one paw. It looked great!

Happy memories from a great two weeks!

‘Bear in goggles’ in their cars…

At least they’ll be safer than the various toys I’ve seen over the years on the front grills of articulated lorries et al

‘Mad Max’ style
