Bench grinder conversion.

I have my Dads old bench grinder which i would like to keep and use as a standard two wheel grinder.

However i have just bought a Lidl £19.99p two wheel grinder which i would like to convert into a polisher/sander, the polishing spindles and wheels are readily available on e-bay but i can’t find any belt conversions like this,

Silverline DIY 240W Bench Grinder & Belt Sander Workshop 3 year warranty

Any help as to where i could source the sanding attachment…presuming the attachment uses the three hole guard mounting holes.

Thanks as always.

Dave.

The Curse of Lidl and Aldi and daft as they call them in Aberdeenshire, “Mannies” who go into both every week and buy stuff that they think will come in handy!!!

Just like you, I a have lots of Lidl and Aldi stuff that was not exactly what I wanted but it was a great deal and I could make it work for me!

I consider there must be a medical condtion that covers this.

If by converting to a polisher you mean fit rag wheels to it you may well find a lack of power.

Rag wheels need a relatively slow speed with loads of grunt.

I looked into doing this a number of years ago. You either make your own, or source one from the US at a silly price. But you’d probably need a much better grinder to bolt it to.

Best bet is just bite the bullet and buy one

What are you looking to polish Dave?

I bought a cheap grinder and converted it to run a mop with a view to polishing victorian padlocks, keys etc, typically brass and steel.

The kit was nowhere near man enough for the job.

Whatever you buy don’t waste your money on cheap kit like that photographed as very unlikely to perform adequately, obviously depending on what you want from it. Way too many of the cheaper machines sold/for sale on ebay which indicates they did not pass muster with original purchaser.

Machine Mart do a couple of bench grinders with a belt sander, one £68.39 inc vat and the other £109.99 inc vat.

Both have 6" grinding wheels.

Regarding using a polishing mop on them, when I was doing up a motorcycle about twenty years ago all I had was a 6" bench grinder with a polishing mop on it. As long as you didn’t push too hard on it I did engine cases, wheel hubs and numerous other aluminium parts. Some stainless steel parts were done as well.

I now have an 8" grinder which will take a bit more ‘abuse’ before the motor starts slowing.

The polishing kit I have is one of these;

It was a lot cheaper when I bought it, probably half the price it is now. Time flies when you’re having fun.

Thankyou all  for the replies.

I might just invest (when i get around to it) in a dedicated sander, because i aint paying this kind of price,

As for the spindle and mop they are readily available and relatively cheap.

Having said all this, my Mother died 16 months ago, and with all the hassle of probate, solicitors etc, and with the onset of winter i didn’t really get round to sorting my Dads garage/workshop out properly, i put the bungalow up for sale which sold almost instantly, and it was a mad rush to empty the bungalow.

Dad had a habit of making wooden boxes to store everything, and i mean everything, now my garage, utility room, spare bedroom and even the dining room are still stacked with boxes which need to be sorted, i even have two pedestal drills cluttering the place up and i am sure, thinking about it, there should be a linishing machine of some description in there.

He has been gone seven years now and i still find it hard to ‘probe’ into his precious tools.
