Bertini GT25 - Body change for BMW Z3 (was mk2)

After months and months of playing on photoshop i have come up with a body change design for the mk2 and mk2.5 MX5
Its is on the same lines as the Monocraft and italia/retroforza… but i have drawn some inspiration form lotus, alfa and ferrari
Here are the first designs - ideally i would like to get moulds made and and a GRP kit produced…
my aim is to get it finished for the 2012 kit car show in may at stoneleigh.

I have called it the Bertini … which was the surname of my Italian grandmother.

Let me know what you think :)

THIS IS NOW BASED ON A BMW Z3

I have to ask, why oh why oh why???

its not ment as any disrespect to the MX5 - of which i am an owner and love…

its just been a childhood dream of mine to design and make a car… from scribbling on exercise books as a boy.

what better car to base my dream on than an MX5?

if anyone else likes it then thats a bonus as i intend to make moulds to reproduce the body panels

I do like some of the features of your design and it may appeal to the kit car types.

thats what im aiming for… its really just something that i want to do as a little project - but if other like it too then thats a bonus

when its all finished i hope to get a stand at the national kitcar show in stoneleigh to see what the kitcar community think.

I like it.

I liked it when TVR made the same shape:

I know they have more lights on the back but that’s just down to the legal regulations for having lights on the back. Everything is a compromise.

Your pictures are pretty though, and if the mk2 looked like that I’d want one more than I do.

i really like this. im sure your grandmother would be proud.

let us see the finished product and process

I like the front a lot, but just my opinion I think it looks like it’s got a fat backside !! Wink

Wouldn’t do it myself, but good luck to you. I’d be interested to see how it all goes and certainly the end product.

In response to the question of ‘Why?’ then there’s no better answer than ‘Why not’. I’m in agreement with the previous response, love the front, not quite so sure about the back. Not a big fan of the ducks tail spoiler. Now if the spoiler were an optional moulding then I’d just tick the no thank you box on the option list.

I can see little hints of Aston, Jag and even Nissan Z cars in there as well as the ones you have listed as inspiration. It doesn’t look like a ‘bitsa’ car though. Looks like a proper design. Nice to see a kit that’s not a Lambo style body on a Trabant chassis or similar.

thanks for the possitive comments - it makes me want to make sure it happens

i bought a bronze/gold mx5 (a colour i dont like) so it will help spur me on to make the kit.

im thinking of reducing the duck tail slightly - not to affect the lines bur to give it a slight cut off appearance

i also toyed with twin rear lights and a US square style number plate - a bit like a 70’s corvette.

i have setup a facebook page which i intend to keep updated as things progress

I like it , could this be adapted to fit the mk 1 if it could I have a tatty roadster that it could be good for?

Aren’t those Mk1 doors on your mockup?

As for similar efforts using the Mk1, I can think of, off hand, the Simpson Design Italia 2, Monocraft MM1, D-Technique TD-1001R

And another Mk1 kit to throw in the mix, the Eva M22:

you are right… they are mk1 doors… i started off designing it based on the mk1 and then decided to base my plans on the mk2. there is not a massive differance, but the door shapes and handels are slightly different to how it should look. i looked at the italia2 and monocraft… i like the front end of the monocraft, however i am not a fan of the italia2, i prefer the original mk1 italia/retroforza. I think both the italia2 and the moncraft are based on the mk2 MX5, but i find the italia2 styling a little akward.

I hope that i dont have to compramise too much with the design when i start to construct the body panals… but im sure everything will not go to plan.

i think that when i start constructing the panels i will be buying an old mk1 to try them on and see if there is a way i can get the kit to fit both cars…  not sure if this is possible at this stage

I think if you could make one for each mark that would be the best idea, as they are so many rusty mk1 and 2 out there that you can get for peanuts.

Put it this way just let me know if you need a prototype built or a hand with anything…i’m up for that!!!

for an aston kit

Certainly creating a lot of interest including the odd offer of help. You haven’t got your location showing in your profile though. Might help to get some local enthusiasts / experts interested. With regard to back lights, I keep seeing lots of rather fancy round lights on the back of buses. Nice simple round units. Might be a better source than breakers yard finds.

i would be glad of any help - im in Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire

i have the car and a nice big powered double garage sorted.

i have a good idea of the bits that i need to create a prototype - and i plan to start work after the summer

my job is such that i should have most thursday and fridays to work on the project.

i do seem to spend alot of time looking at cars thinking - i like that light, vent, indicator… etc… but there are a few kitcar websites where you can buy new lights - im gonna try the lot

if anyone knows or can recomend and bodywork specialists and GRP mold manufacturers that would be handy

i have spoken to one guy who specialises in GRP mould manufacture who gave me a ball park figure for mold manufacture cost of panels from that.
