Best battery for an NC 2010 Mk3.5

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC 2010
  2. I’m based near: __St.Albans
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Battery

I have been researching a new battery for my car and am totally confused as to what size, type, etc I need. Can someone please tell me what is the best make, type, etc and what I should be looking for. I want as powerful one as possible, as I leave my car sometimes for weeks whenI’m abroad and I’m fed up with it being dead when I return.
Many thanks
Martyn

I’ve had two of these below on different cars, direct replacements for the standard fit Panasonics.
From eBay seller… autosessive

Probably best to disconnect it or leave it connected to a battery conditioner.

BTW if left for weeks without use you really need to hook the battery up to a maintenance charger. No matter how powerful the battery it still needs to be maintained or it will soon degrade again and that’s possibly what’s happening to your current battery.

Thanks guys, the battery needs replacing anyway and whilst I know it needs to be maintained I asked my neighbour to start it every few days while i was away, but even after a few days it was still dead, so although i will look after any new battery I will purchase, what I need to know right now is what is the best replacement battery to buy. The Yuasa looks good with a good spec but is it the best and most reliable and perfect fit?
thanks again for your help
Martyn

Each time it is started it then needs to run for possibly as long ten minutes just to replenish the charge used to start it.

If it was low then maybe half an hour to an hour of running could be needed.

With current petrol prices it is cheaper to buy a proper Smart charger! (Ctek, Noco etc)

Thanks for you reply. But again, my neighbour took it out for a run every few days. The battery is old and needs replacing. (and yes, I do have a smart charger, in fact I have two!)
I just want to know what is the best replacement battery for my car. That is all I want to know.

many thanks

Martyn

The one I posted is a perfect fit (see the label on it for model), as I said I’ve fitted 2 to present and past cars, the latter a PRHT and does the job perfectly.:+1:

Other manufacturers available of course.

Thanks very much. You are the only person to actually give me a recommendation so I’ll go with your advice.
The other advice was very good to know but I just wanted to know which is the best to buy.
Thanks again, I’ll order one now.
Cheers

I can recommend Yuasa batteries too. One was fitted to my NB when I got it. I changed it out for a Panasonic because the Yuasa didn’t have vent ports and it’s advisable to vent NB batteries as they are in the boot and buildup of gases can cause rust in the floorpan under the battery. (Venting is not necessary for NCs).

I managed to inadvertantly discharge the Panasonic a couple of months ago. I remembered the Yuasa which had been sitting (indoors in the warm, but unloved and forgotten) for 5 months and to my amazement it still had 12.5 volts on it. I put that in the car and it fired right up.

Obviously not a good way to treat a battery but a testament to the quality of Yuasa batteries.

Oh thats good to hear. Thank you. I’ve just ordered it!!

many thanks guys!!

Any 053 size battery will fit. Your choice on price and quality. Yuasa are good but so are others. The Hankook looks interesting and at a good price point.

Fair enough. Yuasa YBX5053. I fitted one in my 2008 NC in 2017, still good.

Here’s a link to a reply I’ve posted before to another 2010 owner. It shows how it compares physically with the original Panasonic.

Hey Elvis

My NC doesn’t get driven much, normally once a week or even once every couple of weeks. Hence the battery would drain too much and ended up degrading and dying. I went through two batteries in two years :frowning:
After some research, I bought this battery: YBX7053
Being a stop starter battery it’s designed to deal with being drained to 50% (apparently) as opposed to a normal battery which is about 80%. I also bought a solar trickle charger that sits on the dashboard and connects to the OBD port.

This was 2.5 yrs ago so it must work compared to normal batteries
