Best Battery Replacement for NB 2005 2.5 1.8 Icon

It shouldn’t be a huge job, if it’s like for like replacement, and fairly obvious what to do - I suspect there must be a member near you who can look at it with you. I’d volunteer but I’m quite near Watford myself!

Maybe make a new post to see if someone from the local group is prepared to guide/help you?

Thanks John

I managed to keep her Battery going whilst waiting in Queue for 3 months for specialist welding and undersealing when she failed her MOT on this [by running the Engine for about 20 minutes]

Works carried out 2022/23 on the welding/undersealing

No wonder Battery got poorly and now died !!

GRR…Lockdown…and the consequences to us all

To change the battery you need a 12mm spanner for the battery clamp and a 10mm for the battery terminals. One of these works a treat:

To avoid the small risk of a sort-circuit it’s advisable to disconnect the negative terminal first and then the positive, and vice-versa when connecting the new battery. Good luck. Other than physically lifting the batteries it’ll be a doddle. The Panasonic battery is not as heavy as many batteries so that’s a bonus.

Wish I was nearer, I’b be only too happy to lend a hand.

Thanks Terry again

Cut Off Switch arrived…Spanner due some time today :crossed_fingers:

Re a smart charger, this is a 12Volt battery charger with a bit of circuitry which senses the battery resistance and adjusts the the charge rate (amps) as the battery voltage rises, to avoid overcharging which can damage the battery cells. Most modern battery chargers have thar circuitry, older ones rely on it being more difficult to maintain a high amperage because of limits on the transformer (changes 240V to 12V) and rectifier (changes the AC volts into DC) in the charger .
That is different from a trickle charger which is a smart charger but it only provides a low rate of charge. If you buy a smart charger with high and low charge rates, you don’t need a trickle charger.

As for spanners, if you haven’t already bought a 12mm open ended spanner, look for a small set of spanners from about 10mm to 17mm with one end open and the other a ring spanner. Halfords aren’t as expensive as they used to be and places like Screwfix and Toolstation also do automotive tools if you can’t wait for an on-line purchase from e-Bay or Amazon.
Just remember - anticlockwise to undo a nut/bolt. check negative and positive (red with wire a terminal cover) before you removve the old battery and don’t touch the battery terminals together

Tell us how you get on :grinning:

Make sure the new battery is well charged before you fit it- don’t assume it is charged because it is new!

Hi Guys

Well replacing the battery is still a work in progress…

But …you know what

Just got very fed up with not understanding enough about Bullit herself so today have ordered a Haynes Manual [Physical Book plus On-line] as

Barring winning the Lottery [which I don’t play] and getting an Aston Martin

Bullit is my girl for the rest of her/my life

I’ve wanted to understand her better since purchase 2007 but been too busy with work and Life the Universe and Everything

In the olden days we used to say ‘I owe that person a pint’

So for those that have posted and sent me PM…

and not forgetting ‘sister’ to Bullit…‘Madge’

Wishing you happy reading your Haynes manual, I found it a dip in volume rather than a cover to cover read.

The last Haynes I looked at was some years ago, can’t remember what car it was for, and was hopelessly generic, no good at all really.

For the MK1/MK2 era perhaps yours is a proper detailed one, I hope so.

If not, the book to track down is the one by Rod Grainger. Written for the MK1 1.6 but nearly all of it is useful for MK1/2 1.6/1.8.

Particularly useful for torque settings and such, as a rank amateur gives me an idea what I might be able to tackle and what I should stay well clear of

Hi Guys

Shakespeare ‘All the World’s a Stage’…includes the Seven Ages of Man Speech

Guess which Stage I’m in…

Haynes Manual ‘comes with pictures’ [ok you’ve guessed I’m Stage Six in the Seven Ages…so not dead yet]

OK It arrived on the same day it was posted [but I was in the land of nod] and flexible enough to fit through your letter box and on re-cycled paper :+1:

Just scanned it so far [Art…the last time was able to read something complex I think it was ‘Lord of the Rings’ as a teenager but you right re ‘Dip in Volume’…phew]

John… the Manual I bought is ‘1989 to September 2005’ [G to 55 Reg] viz the NB 2.5 which I have and covers the 1.6 and 1.8

As a mechanical numpty I especially like the ‘Spanner’ icon showing degree of difficulty for the job in hand

Phew…changing the battery on 1 x Spanner :crossed_fingers:

Hi Guys

The Battery died on 10th June

Well with both my arthritis and my 1980’s whiplash injury screaming at me saying ‘You Can’t Do This’ physically
And my lack of confidence saying ‘You Can’t Do This’ mentally

This morning I changed the Battery

Bullit started first time so straight down to my non specialist mechanic to make sure I’d done it correctly

[Fortunately not locked out of stereo meanwhile]

It’s Been a Journey to say the least…

[Got so low I thought ‘If you can’t do this you’ll have to give up Bullit’]

Totally shattered

Even lost my Sense of Humour

But if anyone wants to know the ‘nitty gritty’ of changing a battery in NB 2005 2.5 1.8 Icon as a cream cracked old lady

I’m your (wo)man

Thanks Art & Everyone :handshake:

Art…you witty fella [secretly Bullit envies Madge her Track Days]

TerryM1…The Battery Tray looked good but there was something down there [Another day…just relieved didn’t put me back out]

As for sense of achievement …

Mechanics surprised to see me

Mechanic who doesn’t work on my car went off to get his spanner…

Mechanic who does work on Bullit

shouted “She’s Got Her Own Spanner !!” [he was grinning quietly to himself]

Because I was standing there holding my TerryM1 Spanner high in the air

Sense of humour returned

Just can’t move today…me back, me arms, me shoulders, the back of my legs

Learning Point: If your NB Battery doesn’t sound well after approx 6-7 yrs…get a new one BEFORE it dies

Final Thought

Some famous philosopher said “You are put on this earth to gain wisdom…the more wisdom you gain…the better your life will be when you are reincarnated”

I’ve always thought…“Well must have done 'b***** all in my last life 'cos really having to work at this time around”

Just don’t want to be reincarnated as a motor mechanic

Sprayed myself with WD40…[Sorry…‘Cold Deep Freeze’] so more mobile today

[And perhaps less ‘brain fog’ for different reasons as me and Bullit await possible changes to us :crossed_fingers:]

Thanks again guys for support :hugs:
