Yes.

The MK3 1.8 and 2 litre option pack and 2 litre auro I believe did not have the top brace. The Sport and the later Sportec had a braced from the suspension towers to the centre of the back of the engine compartment.

Compared to stock, on a track, what would it do? Make the front end sharper on turn in? Looser at the back?

 

Pointless and not required on your car.

Required on Macpherson strut suspension as massive loads are transferred into the wheel arches from the damper tower bearing/mount, not an issue on a Mk1.
