Best Insurance for MX-5? Emmanuel Katto

Hi everyone, My name is Emmanuel Katto. I wanted to know what insurance companies have you found to be the best for insuring an MX-5? Any tips on getting the best rates?

Looking forward to your responses.

Thanks in advance!
Emmanuel Katto

As an MX-5 Owners Club member I’m with the club insurance for my 1994 NA. The cost and benefits are both great.

I’m sure this is fine for the older models and those who do very few miles. But they won’t quote on NDs if you do more than 6,000 miles a year.

With insurance companies, it boild down to two, maybe three factors

  1. Price (obviously)
    but equally crucial
  2. How they deal with a claim if the worst happens
  3. General customer service when you call them- deal with enquirers well? UK or offshore call centers? How long generally to get through? Easily understandable and helpful at the other end etc etc

Personally I’ve found LV to be easily the best, by a country mile.

Agreed.

My experience with RAC was bad, they even argued with their underwriters! A bit like owning a dog and doing your own barking.
I thought the underwriters (Markerstudy) were quick, precise, honest and reasonable.
RAC dithered and insisted the single incident was two claims (two vehicles?) while at the same time Markerstudy said it was only one claim for one incident and treated it as such.
LV agreed it was a single claim.
You can understand why I’ll not be using RAC as my car insurance agents again.

There are quite a lot of variables to consider here. The best policy/provider for one person, won’t be best for another.

Just a few things that will come into play:

What MX5 model are we talking about?
How many miles will you drive annually?
Is it your only car?
Do you want to generate an NCB from the policy?

And obviously your age/location/driving experience/driving record play a part, as they do in policies for any car you’re talking about.

Always worth running it through the usual price comparison sites to give you a benchmark. Then talk to some specialists. I’ve used Footman James and Lancaster and had positive experiences. Other owner experiences may vary. We are talking about insurance companies after all…

I am in the process of changing my MX5, tfom a 2000 California, and was astonished to be told by the club’s insurance people that the 2011 model was TOO NEW for them to provide cover. Fully garaged, limited mileage, no commuting, it just does not make sense. In the end I resorted to one of the comparison sites and got cover at a very good price from Lancaster insurance.
Just as a point if interest, I got a similar response from my existing insurance provider, Adrian Flux, a 2011 car is too new for them to cover. They did say that they would look into an alternative company, but it took them more than a week to come back to me, and then the price was stupidly high.

@emmanuelkatto - which model/year do you have and what location are you?
