I really don’t want a loud exhaust. Louder than OEM but not LOUD, allows for burbles on the over run with the odd pop when changing up gears would be perfect. No boom and minimal rasp.
Best value seems to be the racing beat option. I wont entertain the £300 options from ebay or the cheap mx5 parts one as I know very well you get what you pay for so we know the price range is £450-£630 for something half decent.
If you could list your current set up (down pipes and de cats, induction etc) up a long with what cat back system you have I can make a good plan on which one will serve me best.
Thats the thing isn’t it. They are all very expensive. I guess its a case of twin pipes means more materials. Cobra seem to be the go to choice but I have seen a few people have burned there bumper fitting the cobra exhausts as they have 4 inch tail pipes. Have you had any melting plastic from yours?
Cobalt has a nice tone without being too loud, it sounded like what a sports car should sound like rather than the standard offering.
I see Moss now have stock again for the NC, if the quality is the same and noise from it is the same as the one I had fitted buy it.
NC2 2.0l Sport PHRT
Racing Beat decat manifold, stock mid section, IL Motorsport back box.
With the top down, I don’t need to listen to music as the exhaust note is music to my ears. Burbles on standard map, snap, crackles and pops on the go faster map but a little boomy with the top up.
BBR do loads of options. they have manifolds, mid pipes and two back boxes, a GT and a more free flowing one that with certain configurations can become too loud.
If you want just a back box you may want to go with the race type but if you have a full exhaust system you probably want the GT (that’s the one I have) because the race exhaust on a full BBR race exhaust system will be loud. as for price its four digits, ask BBR or check website for latest prices as with the current economy they do change often.
With a stock engine map the manifold and back box will change the amount of popping, type of catalyst as well (like using a high flow type will allow more flow and will let more noise come out)
A custom engine map can allow over fuelling or spray some amount of fuel near the exhaust stroke. This can be tailored to suit for some nice sedate popping noises when you lift to some serious bangs (that can surely destroy the catalyst if you have one).
My set up…Racing Beat header and downpipe…high flow cat…Cobalt cat back. (Egr delete + Polyurethane hangers). I also have a Malian cat back but have never fitted it might give that a go.
Personally £450-£630 just to add noise seems like a waste. Manifold add noises as well as less restrictive so actually adds a tiny amount of performance gain.
