Best tyres for NB

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NB Icon __
  2. I’m based near: Cheltenham
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

Best for the road or track?
For road you can’t do better than Michelin PS ,3 or 4. I couldn’t find any PS tyres during lockdown so fitted Continental Premium Contact. I’m happy with them on wet or dry roads and have twice the power of your car, so you’ll be ok.
Another tyre that’s gaining popularity with light cars is Uniroyal Rainsport 4 or 5.

Hi there it’s for road- am changing all 4. Thanks very much for the advice !

Since buying my NBFL in Jan 2015 I have used Uniroyal Rainsport 3s which I have just replaced due to their age with Rainsport 5s. Would recommend as I have found them excellent for all conditions. Reasonablely priced as well.

Thanks I have rainsport 3s on now and they look a bit ropey due to age. Thanks for the tip

On my NC (205 45 17) I have just put on four Goodyear Asym6 tyres. Very low Noise Vibration and Hardness, really seem to smooth and quieten the road surfaces. Seem very grippy too. I came from Asym5 and these are an improvement on an already great tyre.

With Michelins, I beleive the PS4 has just been replaced with PS5. PS4 was a great tyre, 5 should be even better.

I’ve fitted Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance 2 to my NB. They aren’t the most common choice for the MX-5 but I’ve used them on different cars in the past and I’m very pleased with them because they do exactly what it says on the label without being overly expensive.

Thanks everyone

I need 4 tyres failed MOT but only done 1000 miles in 4 years…The failed ones are because of cracks only done around 1200 miles and tread wise like brand new.So dont want to spend lots to have same problem. So think im going to Nankang either NS-20 or AS-2+ £60 a corner mines NC on 17inch.Only do spirited drives in dry weather. Anyone know if 5’s like asymmetrical or directional tyres.

My UP! GTI came with Goodyear efficient grip performance in 195/40x17 from new, and tbh they could be renamed Defficient grip, Not impressed. Plus they’re wearing very fast. I’m not a complete animal with it either, (it’s averaging over 50mpg) but do ‘make progress’ on the twistys. Maybe different sizes have different characteristics.
I’ll certainly be replacing them with something else when they’re down to around 3mm, which at current rates will be less than 10k miles for all four. (I’ve already swapped them front to rear)
To be positive, at least they’re wearing evenly across the tread.:upside_down_face:.

This is a perfect example of how online recommendations for “the best” tyres, oil, antifreeze etc. will always cause controversy and it’s difficult to rely on them.

Your unsatisfactory experience balances out mine….but my tyres are on an MX-5 NB with standard 14” wheels, not another entirely different vehicle with a very low profile tyre of a different size.

However, the same tyres came on my ‘12 plate Fiat Panda, which had 4,000 miles on the clock when I bought it and they lasted for 30,000 miles in total; they didn’t need changing until last autumn.

Just recently fitted our 5th set of 16" rubber in the 2002 Sport.
That’s 62,000 miles over 16 & a half years of harsher urban daily stuff.
Always Kept It Simple Stupid between either good 'ol Toyo or Kumhos.
I usually scrap them all at 3ml across the treads. Not as if they break the bank really.
Never had cracking issues. Just good simple Work a Day covers.
Last set of current Toyos ( 215 due to Rota rims) were just £55.00 per fitted at home via Demon Tweaks.
Simples…
I think just sometimes…people start to overthink the subject.
So long as we don’t fit horrid nasty £30.00 a corner stuff…it’s unlikely we will visit a hedge really.
Just my POV. Opinions…differ!
