Bettabuilda's AHURA MAZDA

I did Geoff and they don’t do them  They do a Dutch Orange which might be good for the 30AE brigade

Very nice rim protectors Barrie. I am not a huge fan of these but Laughing my spare set of Mk3.5 rims I had taken off and replaced with another set due to the kerb rash from the previous owner.

Now the current wheels, the tyres are getting worn I was looking at getting the old set refurbished with new tyres for the 3.5. This may just be a saver as it is only light kerb marks with the colour etc all okay.

Any idea on the visible size they would cover ? so I can check the rim damage will be covered.

Hi Ian, from the front, the total face showing, i measured at 10-11mm. The internal lip, measured by sleeving a piece of thin card up between rim and guard,  measures 7-8mm. Having said that, I’m not sure inner edge of the rim guards sit tight against the extreme edge of the rim, if that makes sense? They do make a reasonable job of accommodating the spokes on the OEM wheels though that extend to the outer edge.

Ive had another look and the guards leave a gap of about 1-2mm on the rear edge between tyre and guard. Obviously first time fit for me, I might have another go as I don’t think the tangs have fully engaged behind the rim? TBH, they don’t look bad at all but I still don’t really want to recommend them as they may yet bed in more or at the other extreme, pop off! Unlikely I know, but quite expensive for what they are.

Would be interesting to install on a tyreless rim to see how well they might fit. Even with the tyres deflated, they are still sat on their bead and it’s quite hard to ease the tyre away from the back of the rim using the tool provided, whilst pushing from the outer edge. Overall though, they do look OK and form a perfect circle with no joint as they are continuous.

Thanks Barrie for a quick response and the sizes will be very useful.

Certainly an option over fully refurbing the rims if not required.

Not cheap but cheaper than having them redone due to kerb rash.

Hi Ian, just waiting for the replacement single ring to arrive in the post. More than happy to send you a small piece of the damaged one in the post. You could offer it up to your rims as a template which would be a help in decision making? HTH

What a star

PM sent

While awaiting delivery of my replacement rim ring, these arrived!

They are the last bit of my wheel embellishments  No wanting to rush into fitting them, I spent all of a minute taking that picture before rushing into the garage to get stuck in!

Obvioulsly, just a straightforward like for like replacement, so by doing one at a time, no need to raise the wheel off the ground. The little end caps are unscrewed using the little “key” shown at the bottom of the picture. This allows use of the nut adapter to tighten/undo the nut itself. You can just make out a rubber O ring, which presumably helps seal against ingress of dirt or water onto the threads. I used a squirt of PTFE spray just before replacing the caps.

Half an hour later and I ended up with this,

They are just what I wanted so I’m well happy with the finished result. A couple more pics below.

Shes coming along very nicely Barrie. Those wheel nuts look sweet!! I’ve not posted up about this yet but I’m unfortunately downsizing my car collection due to us decideding to sell our house and move to the country. Can’t find a house with a decent garage yet so sold my daily driver MINI Cooper, using the civic aerodeck as a daily driver now and Mindy my mk1 mx5 will also probably be going. My plan is to replace her with a mk3 MX5 and use that as my daily, whilst dosing some subtle mods. Had our first drive in a 2ltr sport coupe on Saturday and must say they drive really nice! Very smooth and refined compared to my mk1 (although not as communicative/raw). Really enjoyed it, but even though car had only done 40k on an 07 plate, the underside was prestty nasty with rust. It had also had both front doors and rear quarters resprayed (pretty poorly by all accounts) so walked away from it. Drove spot on though!

Will be looking at your previous NC and your current one for inspiration for when we get ours!

Hi chillax, thanks, I hope you are fully recovered now  went from a string of mk1’s over the years myself to the previous mk3, not knowing much about them. Rust is the killer on these, just as it is on mk1/2/2.5’s. A lot of the underside is surface rust on sub frames and suspension components, they can look awful but can be sorted relatively easily with some time and application of decent rust treatments. Bubbling around side wing repeaters, rear arch lips and rear of sills behind the side skirt plastic trims. Under leading edge of bonnet and under boot lid where the number plate lights are. Not quite as easily sorted. Mechanically, I think they are great, just keep up with oil checks. My current 2.0, does not use oil but I still check it almost every time I go out in it, force of habit I guess but easy to do. I did have a roof issue on this one but believe I was just unlucky. I don’t think you you’ll be disappointed if you get the right car though

Well a little birdie told me he,s going to drive it tomorrow, so that’s a Italian tune up added to the list, see you there Baz, Rob.

Thanks chaps  not so much an Italian tune up, set off at 06.45 this morning for N Wales, hardtop folded down all the way  the fog was really bad on the M62 for quite a few miles, so kept both distance and speed at sensible levels. I was amazed at the number of vehicles not displaying any lights whatsoever, let alone fog lights, in the thickest parts of the fog. Overtaking me at a right rate of knots. Hurtling towards who knows what with visibility down to probably 100yds or less in places. Just kept out of the idiots way, that was the best thing to do. TBH, not driven in dense fog for quite some time myself and it was possibly the first time for a lot of the motorway drivers this morning, judging by their behaviour  Only went past one accident, small hatchback with front all smashed, facing the wrong way in the fast lane. Several workers had spilled out of a van in an attempt to warn others ( not motorway but construction related guys) flashing torches along the hard shoulder to warn folk. Well it worked for me, thanks guys, whoever you were  Hopefully no one hurt.

i bet most of the idiots were in German cars as well Barrie ?

I wonder how many of the drivers were quite happily bowling along with their instrument lights on and DRLs on at the front. See it all the time down here on the M4

Morning Steve,

bet most of the idiots were in German cars as well Barrie ?”

TBH, a bit of a mixed bag? Certainly a few older Chavved up beemers, some small hatches, (corsa, fiesta etc) also , as Dave said, when (if) you got past them, DRL’s working but that was all. When everyone’s travelling in the same direction, it’s important to be visible from the rear in bad visibility. Is it one of those auto functions that folk think makes them invincible? Perhaps rear lighting at least, should come on when the car is started, along with the front facing DRL’s. I’ll post elsewhere as I actually have a fault on the dash lights not displaying front/rear fogs even though they are working

Barrie

Not done much recently. Been knocking hell out of the retro HiFi thread

Anyway, this morning I was looking for an acrylic plate I had somewhere for a little project on that other thread but never found it, what I did find though was an A/C recharge bottle with oil and leak detector mixed in. Forgot I even had it TBH. My A/C has never worked and the compressor didn’t even kick in when switched on. Took the LP port cap off the system, connected the bottle and gave it a good blast of refrigerant whilst running the engineering with the A/C on and set to 15* C, after a few seconds, the compressor kicked in with an accompanying slight change in engine revs. Let it run a while and then put some more charge in. Will have to see what happens. At least the compressor works

I purchased this car at the end of March this year, it had approximately 9 months MOT left to run. It’s now approaching that time for renewal.

Ive spent a lot on the car, not all being cosmetics  I’m thinking that it should pass easily but you never know. How the car stands at the moment,

  • full set of brand new tyres on refurbished wheels
  • New back box (certainly not loud) remainder of system appears sound, no blowing etc
  • New front and rear anti roll bars and bushings
  • New droplinks all round
  • Refurbished calipers and very good recent discs all round
  • New Bosch windscreen wipers
  • All underbody surface rust issues dealt with (mainly sub frames)
  • New Meisterr coilovers all round
  • New replacement Revlimiter dial gauges showing all warning lights (fogs etc) no EML lights displayed
  • No body damage or corrosion issues
  • Aftermarket DRL's fitted with correct controller for dimming
  • All light bulbs either replaced or checked for full functionality
  • Fully working horn
  • No identified cracks or splits in any of the rubber boots or gaiters
  • Does not leak oil or fluids
  • No cracked light lenses
  • Seatbelts in good order, retracting pretty well too!
  • No windscreen damage or obscuring of view,
The only thing I'm not sure about is the emmisions? Car has just turned 9 years old with 116k miles, returns 35+ mpg all day long, no smoke at any time, does not burn oil, all fluids changed and filters when I bought it (2k miles done). I hope I'm worrying unduly but I hate advisories and even worse would be a major fail. Will be going in next week so fingers crossed that all is in order

Just for info, the Bosch wipers were £10 including prime next day for a pair!

A bargain, identical to the ones on the car but they weren’t as effective as they once were, a bit like me!
