Big end failure NC 1.8

Hi All,

Not the best first post…

I have recently bought a 1.8 mk3 07 plate 68k, unfortunately when driving there was a rattle that then got very loud tinny knocking noise. The car was taken to a garage, sump removed and cyl 2 big end journal has failed, crank scored and con rod scored too, I have looked into possible solutions and they are expensive. but am looking for advice really any thoughts are more than welcome.

Sorry to hear that. These modern engines are not easily re-buildable in the way that Mk1/2 engines were with a crank re-grind and new shells etc. It would probably be possible to order a new crank and bearing assembly but probably more practical to source a good used engine from a supplier like Autolink.

According to Paul Roddison a while back, these mills don’t rebuild too well.

I presume, since he builds up racing mills, he means for us Joe Soap folk needing a standard engine.

The mantra with these engines is Oil Oil Oil. Essential to keep it right up to the mark and even then with the older Mk3…keep your digits crossed.

Speak to Paul, he may have a known bottom end available.

Getting a used full engine is a lottery as you can imagine.

Apparently the later facelift engines are tougher. Just as well.

I’d allow around £8/900.oo for a engine circa £400.00 then 3 hours out and 4 hours in @ £60.00 per hour.

Can you guess I’ve been there?

Thanks for the reply, that’s a lot less for the engine than I have been quoted!

So I am guessing you went the engine swap route?

The problem you have with the early MK3 is well known and Mazda have produced a lengthy technical bulletin about it.

Unlike the MK1 and MK2 cars where a lot have been scrapped and you can pick them up for a reasonable price.

The age of the NC cars is still young, therefore less than 10 years and only accident damaged cars are at the scrap yards.

There are a small number of engine failures but that small number is around the same as the number of accident damaged cars.

Therefore there is no ready stock of good used engines to reduce the price.

OTOH there are plenty of early car engines and gearboxes waiting to be sold.

My guess and I could be wrong is you will be nearer £1,600 for an engine but I hope less.

Reports from the states is that while the components of the engines changed during 06,07 and 08 prior to the face lift there was no good year and Mazda would replace with components from different years!

I haven’t seen many engines for sale tbh, which is a worry, I guess you have a point about the amount of blown engines to crashed ones.

Hello and welcome, hope you get sorted soon. Think I will stick with my Mrk 1’s

Thanks, me too! should have gone for a mk2, there seems to be an abundance of parts!

As has been mentioned oil on the max always, you don’t get two chances.

Give Paul a ring he will get it fixed for you.

1.8 engines are not as scarce as 2.0 units.
