Big Red Start Button in a Mk2.5 MX-5

I’ve recently bought a Start Button for a 2001 Mk 2.5. I’ve wired up the button itself and the relay (correctly - I’ve checked it more than once), but when I connected the 2 heavy gauge wires to the back of the ignition switch, I get no response from the button - it doesn’t operate the starter motor.

The original instructions stated connect the two wires coming out of the relay to the White/Black and Blue wires. I contacted the seller of the button who suggested that if I had a 2000 model year car, then I should try the White/Black and Black/Red wires. Still no joy.

The wiring to the ignition switch looks like this:

White           White/Black

White/Red     White/Red

Black/Red       Blue

Anyone got any ideas? I’ve seen the “How to…” article elsewhere in the forum, but it refers to the Mk 1.

The white/red (either) is the feed from the battery to the ign switch & the white goes off to the starter cut relay. So in short, join the relay between the white/red & white wires.

Robbie, thanks very much for this - I tried again today with the wiring that you suggested, but without success. Having tested it with a multimeter, your post is spot on, but it appears that the relay is shggd! I’ll get a new one.

Again, thanks for your help, Robbie. Much appreciated!

Rather than start a new topic about Big Red Buttons, I wanted to ask you Robbie; What do the two silver switches on your dash control?

I really like the idea of having more switches and such to play with so I was thinking about installing a BRB and perhaps a couple of switches into a blank din plate. Not really sure what the switches could control though? I read topics on the Miata forum about controling fuel pressure, ACC, main power feed from the battery and such. What do you think?

I then thought, if I just want some switches to flick and look ‘different’ but avoid fucking up my cars fuel system I could just install some switches and LEDs connected to 9v batteries!!

I don’t think I have 2 silver switches on my dash… do I? Where have you “seen” them?

Apologies for slow response. I saw something (might have been on Nutz) called “Rob Roadster” and he showed an image of his dash which had said switches on. Obviously not you Robbie, sorry for the confusion!
