Bike on board an MX5

If it’s of any interest to anyone tested out this combo for the first time today. I have been using the carrier on the family saloon but today I thought why not test the suggestions it would work on an MX5!

The bike carrier is a SARIS Bones 3 and the bike is 25kg motor and battery included.

Just make sure the bike tyres are no too close to the car’s exhausts. I’ve known a couple of occasions where the tyres have got hot enough to melt and blow during a long trip. If they are close you need to shield them.

Thank you for that.
I don’t think it would work on the prht mind…

I have the saris bones and it seems to work great on my mx5 too.

But, it worries me that the bike covers the number plate, so I never really use the combination much.

With regard to the hard top issue the adjustment of the arms would allow it, the principle of the carrier is that it is attached to the boot lid not the body, to a certain degree the bumper at the back takes some minimal weight but the PRHT cover can be avoided.

Number plate I agree its also an issue on the family saloon, a second rear plate and a bungy would solve the issue for any blue light.

Exhaust on tyre good point I can lift the carry arms to raise the bike no problem.

I just thought its one more excuse to use the toy rather than the daily.

Works for me.

Be careful with these types of carriers that the crank/pedal nearest the car cannot rotate whilst you are in motion. I had this happen to me and it took loads of paint off the car where it had been bouncing against it

That’s interesting, I saw a RF at the Elvington event with a carrier on the roof? Chainless, (the bike that is) and the main sprocket/crank looked to be mm’s from the roof! Looked very professional though (and expensive)

One of these suction type ones maybe?

I wasn’t thinking about weight on the prht deck, only about having enough clearance for that deck to move backwards when I open the roof.

:+1: yes indeed it was, or similar thing.
