Bilstiens on a mk1

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ 96 eunos vr limited
  2. I’m based near: __ dorset
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __ suspension

My vr limited is currently on kyb agx struts and unknown springs. A set of mk2.5 bilstein struts and springs have become available not a million miles away (for once!)
Whats the ride likely to be like if i were swap to the billys??

If factory NB springs, the car will ride high. NB Bilsteins had better rates than the NA Bilsteins. I would change the springs for a NB lowering set, such as Tein mediums. The ride will be better mainly because of increased rear shock travel. Obviously include all the NB top mount hardware, and renew where necessary. All NB original factory shocks are now old, so I would use cautiously. Would have been ok 10 years ago putting on low miles used shocks, but those NB parts, unless more recent replacements, are now 20+ years old. Bushes, bumpstops will all be a bit worn. The used parts need to be marked up LF, RF, LR, RR.

Here’s Project Merlot fitted with NB Bilsteins and NB springs as in the later post image. [Correction from previous misinformation!]

When they were first fitted and the jack was lowered we were wondering what 4x4-look monster we’d created, but they settled down and I think you’ll agree it looks fine. As for handling and comfort, that photo was taken at the Nurburgring in the middle of a 1400-miles-in-a-week road trip, and it was great for both.

The Bilsteins were bought on eBay and it has made the car a joy to drive again from it’s previous tired (and track spec) shocks.

Pretty sure they were NB springs too.
