Like many of you, my car has been laid up for most of the winter.
It’s now getting near daily use and although I don’t usually leave the handbrake on overnight (car garaged) the rear passenger side brake has started to bind.
Anybody else had problems with this?
When i bought my roadster all of the brakes seemed to bind, im not mechanically minded but had a go at taking them apart and putting them together again which seemed to free them up a bit but at my mot last week it failedon the brakes a d needed three callipers, if i was more confident i would have bought a new sealing kit and stripped the callipers down as it was the piston that was causing the problem but i just got the new callipers instead.
Yep lack of use and they soon seize. Also the slider pins stick as well, so a strip down to see what the cause is usually best.

Yes this is one of those problems that could have several causes. What you do about it will depend on your level of ability and desire to get involved but in order I’d check/do this to both sides to keep/maintain balance,
-
Sticking handbrake cable - remove wheel and get someone to operate lever whilst you check the cable moves freely at the caliper end - free off with oil spray (or replace - a bit involved)
-
If free but not much movement reset the clearance by removing plug and using allen key (note that the disc should be held firmly in place with a couple of wheel nuts and washers whilst doing this)
-
Sticking pads caused by corrosion - remove/scrape clean/replace with cera tec or copaslip on metal contact parts
-
Sticking slider pins (under rubber boots) - remove clean lube with red rubber grease and replace boots if needed
-
Sticking piston caused by corrosion between piston and bore - replacement/rebuild.
Haynes 61016 does cover the back brakes and handbrake cables well at all levels. If completely new to this note that the small black plastic cover with a pip on it pulls off to reveal a bolt!
Editted to include slider pins!
Thanks for your help, all
I have been able to ease things up just by taking the wheel off and using some WD40, which was good. However, full brake service to follow over the summer at some point.
Cheers folks
I once left the handbrake on my MK3 escort for about 3 months whilst I was away in Norway playing war/sking…well getting bloody cold falling over a lot…and the brakes seized…being thick as s58t i tried rocking the car back and forwards a bit hoping it would free up…they didn’t…bearing in mind I had been womanless for 3 months…and on a promise some 200 miles away…I thought bugger it, and just drove around the parade ground of Stonehouse barraks with the rear wheels locked…after a great slide of some 30m they unseized…I left a long mark on the parade ground and was off up the A38 like a scolded cat…brakes were fine after that…but since then I only ever leave the car in gear if not on the road…and if in the garage (where it’s flat) push the car a few inches back and forwards everyday or so to prevent the brakes sticking, and reduce “flat” spottting on the tyres…if not using the car for a while…over inflate the tyres by a good 10 pounds as that helps reduce flat spotting…oh the girl dumped me not long after that…she thought I only wanted her body…silly girl…her dad owned a pub !
