Black paint

    Hi, I had my rear driver’s side wide resprayed recently because the local bin men scratched it. On giving the car a clean and polish a few days ago I realised that the paint they’ve used seems of have a metallic fleck in it when the rest of the car is plain black. Is there a number of different paints used on Black MX5s? They are saying they think there is only one Mazda MX5 black!

Yes there was the solid/plain brilliant black, and the sparkly/mica jet black and sparkling black.

Thats annoying if you have one side mica and one side solid, sounds like it needs re-re-painting!

Hi AndyMk2… that’s what I thought… yep… it’s definitely the wrong paint then… it’s not over all of the panel… probably 50% of it… I’ll go back to them tomorrow and show them your reply! Thanks!

If you tell us what year and what model of MX-5 yours is, we can probably work out which Black yours is and what the paint code for it is.

OK, that was first registered in October 2012, so I think that it could possibly be either a 3.5 or a 3.75. Can you have a look at this page and click on the 3.5 and 3.75 links, and tell us which yours is (the shape of the fog lights is probably the quickest way to tell).

Also, are there any “Special Edition” badges on your car, either inside or outside?

Hi Philip … it’s a 3.5 - leaf shaped fog lights.
No… no special edition - it’s a bog standard 2.0 Sports Tech.

Ok - assuming that this is the correct brochure for your car, then the paint colour would have been Brilliant Black (which is not a mica colour) and the paint code is A3F.

Hi Philip… yep, that’s definitely my car… leaf shaped fog lights and that shaped grill.

Yep… so thanks again,… I’ll be off to the paint shop tomorrow to get them to re-spray it!
