Speaking of blackberries Joe, It reminds me of our old but sadly now deceased black Labrador Bess who was inordinately fond of blackberries and other fruit , victoria plums and even tomatoes if she managed to sneak into the glass house.
She would purse her lips as she sucked the juceiest fruits off the lower branches of the bramble bushes in the lane by our gate.
On one occasion this elicited a peevish complaint from a middle age lady passing by with her basket. " Your dog is taking all the best fruit"
to which I replied
“as they are by our gate Bess thinks they belong to her, however she probably wouldn’t mind if the lady had a few too”.
The lady went on her way muttering darkly.
Gales
now that is something i’ve never heard before, a fruit loving dog!
Its not rare Joe - my Retreiver loves blackberries, raspberries, apple, banana and grapes (although you aren’t supposed to let them have grapes).
Here she is in action:
She only takes ripe fruit though - she’s not daft!
Brilliant Andy, I never actually managed to have a camera with me when Bess went scrumping. She was also very selective.
Cheers Gales
well blow me darn wiv a fevver.
fab video Andy, I had a beautiful border collie for 14 years & he never took an interest in fruit of any kind.
Gelert, him peeking from under the gate, has very catholic tastes, fruit being one of them. I wonder why I’m the designated bag carrier on our walks? [:-"]
One can only hope they overbalance their ladder one day soon
Our Terriers love the odd blackberry, they are partial to quite a few fruits such as mandarin segments, strawberries, apple as well as the stalk core of cabbages, cauliflower etc. You must check what they can eat of course, grapes and raisins are a no-no.
We are lucky that our walks have several miles of blackberry brambles which are really underpicked, poo bags come in handy for other uses then, passers by sometimes wonder how two small dogs could pass in excess of two pounds of stuff in four bags until they find out it’s fruits of the forest.
