Blanking Off EGR Valve

Hello All,

Has anyone blanked their MX5 NC EGR valve as an alternative to replacing it?

Do you need to do anything after its blanked off to clear the engine management light and keep it stayed off?

Many thanks.

Doing this makes you liable to a stiff fine as you are removing emission control equipment from the car.

The forum is not a place to discuss this type of action.

If your EGR has failed, then I can understand the reason for wanting to blank it.

The price of a replacement is silly money.

However, it seems that a mondeo one is the same valve and about a 1/4 of the price.

It’s also been noted, that it may be possible to replace the stepper motor and solve the problem.

As for blanking off, I can’t comment.

Blanking it off may not clear the fault, the fault usually is to do with the electrics in the stepper motor and not to do with EGR flow. For the grief of getting if of to blank it you may as well change it, it’s not a job I’d want to do twice. Space is limited at the back of the engine. If you do go down the replacement route, you can just unscrew the top electrical part of the unit and replace that rather than replacing the complete assembly.

They are very expensive - mine failed 2 years ago & the bill from my independent garage to supply & fit was about £400.

Re. the Mondeo item, I saw a thread some time ago which appeared to confirm that, while this could be made to fit, the car & the valve needed a bit of modification - from memory I seem to recall that the issue on the MX-5 is due to a coolant hose being in the wrong place to suit the Mondeo item; & on the valve, the stepper motor needs to be removed & refitted in a different position to adapt from Mondeo fitment to MX-5 fitment?

Great constructive feedback, many thanks.

I think I’ll have a look on ebay tonight and see if I can get an MX5 stepper or a complete valve instead of the blank and remap route I was going to take.

I found one on ebay, second hand EGR valve for £40+postage that according to compatible vehicles will fit a 2008 2.0 but not 2007 2.0.

May be a compatibility error as as far as I know they are the same car. I have the 2007.

I know they are tricky to fit, anything to watch for? Can I cancel the EML by disconnecting the battery and touching the positive and negative together.

I’d just undo the 4 cross head screws and swap the motor part. Removed the plastic scuttle panel then remove the metal panel above the back of the engine. Get a good fitting #2 Philips head screw driver, put all your weight on it and crack the screws off, they can be tight. There is a metal gasket between the motor part and the valve part. Trust me, without the angled special service tool that is a cranked spanner, the valve is a real pig to get off! I’ve never heard of touching the battery terminals together but disconnecting it and holding the brake pedal on for 30 seconds may clear the codes, or they may clear themselves after a number of drive cycles (engine starts).

OK, I don’t know if anyone is interested because maybe they have the same problem but here is an update.

I’ve bought a new genuine Ford EGR valve for £40 off ebay, no brainer really as second hand Mazda was slightly more expensive.

I’m planning on changing just the stepper and modifying the hose.

Maybe an update from me when I receive and fit.

Cheers
